@GrantSlatton I do a lot of both. I spend a ton of time in front of screens both consuming media and contributing to good government reform as a volunteer.

Feels like one of the sharpest self-segregations are people with mainly consumptive vs productive hobbies Both groups really don't understand or interact much with the other

I'm now realizing that this vote probably got thrown out for being considered an overvote in the first rank. Seriously, RCV needs to allow equal rankings.
Sass💜🐦@SassOfficial

I found @LondonBreed's biggest supporter. This voter filled in all 10 rank bubbles next to London Breed. Then, they wrote London’s name in and filled in all 10 of those bubbles, too. 😭

@SassOfficial That's precisely why final-4 & open primaries works so well It reduces complexity of counting, as there are fewer permutations And makes it so that the number of options is equal to the number of ranks + 1

For any voting methods fanatics out there who don't believe RCV is the best approach, here is what I would wager proves my point that later-no-harm is the most important Have people vote as suggested below on dinner choice that they'll actually eat, giving people 5 options on an RCV form with equal rankings allowed Then do it 50 times with the same people, each time allowing them to see the results Not a simulation, real people What do their votes look like on the 50th time? I would wager everyone would stop using equal rank

@iBringBalance I want the option to be available. It's hard to know how many would take advantage of it.

I mean it suffers from all the problems I've discussed & in practice just degrades to the same crap we have today with plurality What you propose does give an interesting psychology test though When you give people the option to give equal rank, what do people do? I would wager almost no one puts equal rank

@SassOfficial Then it's not called RCV The "R" in RCV is Ranked If you have less columns, then it's approval, not ranked And then fails later-no-harm - at which point, why complicate it? Just use approval

@tomaspueyo @mollyculetheory No it absolutely does NOT prove a treatment can work. While "can" is a lower bar than "does", it's not that low. This could have very, very easily been a fluke. It tells us nothing of significance. She's free to apply for a grant to do a real study, but this does not count.

@mollyculetheory A sample size of 1 has the role of proving a treatment CAN work, not that it DOES work. It inspires and opens the path to RCTs, which then can prove the treatment DOES work

Should you be able to experiment on your own cancer? This expert virologist did. It was the 3rd time her cancer appeared. It didn't bode well. So she injected viruses in her tumor and it shrunk. But most journals didn't want to publish her results. Why? Because they're dumb 🧵

@tomaspueyo Or because a sample size of 1 cannot produce statistically significant results?

@iBringBalance No, it'd be much simpler. You could have fewer columns on the ballot, and just treat each round of the RCV tally like Approval instead of Choose One. Way fewer voided ballots.

@SassOfficial Pretty sure most people think it's confusing enough as it is That would add an insane amount of complexity during counting

@RankedChoiceFTW Borda is also trash. It uses explicit ranks and has a ballot completion requirement, which leads to an artificial boost for unknown candidates. This creates outcomes that are worse than random. Here's my list: x.com/SassOfficial/s…

If you think I'm just a hater, then I think you just haven't spent enough time studying voting science and participating in electoral reform. Choose One Voting is bad, but it's not the worst, and the effort it takes to upgrade needs to be worth it.

@SassOfficial I see you're an opponent of RCV, while a proponent of other voting reforms. Okay. My approval ballot of voting systems looks like: ❌ Plurality ✅ RCV ✅ Approval ✅ STAR ✅ Borda ✅ Condorcet

As voting method reformers, we care deeply about addressing the root causes of problems. The root cause of this problem is that Ranked Choice Voting is worse than Choose One Voting.

@iBringBalance It's incredibly frustrating that you can't see how $50m and thousands of volunteer hours were just thrown away. The voters don't want your reform. Find a better one.

@SassOfficial RCV & final-4 is good reform, in terms of actually reforming instead of making people feel better & not actually changing anything Explaining that to people can be difficult, as our conversations have shown

@CodyOConnell4 Here's some peer review on a handful of popular methods showing problems with accuracy and honesty incentive. Not worse than Choose One here, but comparable to Top Two Runoff, which RCV often replaces in practice. starvoting.org/peer_review
