@RyanGarciaESM people thinks this tells us "analytics" can't capture scrappy teams when it really just reveals the playoffs have expanded to the point teams that aren't good get wild card seeds.

Every year we do “the analytics can’t capture this” about a scrappy team that gets the doors blown off of them in October

@YankeesFiles That seems, extremely bullish. I am looking at Clay Davenport’s 3rd order standings which has liked us more so far this season, too. Shocked PECOTA likes the Rays that much unless they have some very easy schedule going forward that will help them.

PECOTA Check. The model now basically believes the Yankees will be multiple games better than the Rays over the rest of the season, but that the Rays have banked enough wins for that not to matter. All the FG playoff odds models (except season to date and coin flip) prefer NYY.

@YankeesFiles I was told these numbers don’t matter because we have too many .700 OPS bats and guys below the Mendoza line plus we are already going to get bounced in the ALDS. Gotta love fans who can’t stand this team.

This would be one way to look at a comparison of the Yankees and Rays.

@YankeesFiles Rays poor fundamentals on the base paths and bunting cost them, sad!

@LombardIsKing_ Also if you have any lead that is greater than innings left (ex. up 4 after 6 innings) you could use this guy and never lose. Any good team would use this guy to great effect.

@LombardIsKing_ This pitcher would be extremely valuable as a closer. People are focusing on the 9 ERA, which in a normal context is awful. However, if you have any lead greater than 1 run you have a guaranteed win after 8 innings. For context the Yankees had 72 such games last year.

Weird question. Realistically how valuable would a pitcher who only and ever gives up one run each inning he pitches would be? Like he gives up a homer to the first batter then 1-2-3 rest of the inning

@RyanGarciaESM Devin Williams having an unlucky year in 2025 is having negative effects on our pen this year. Could’ve really used him back.

The Yankees are 4-4 in games they’ve led after six innings during their 4-10 stretch

One thing I am learning from the discourse following this game is that Rays fans are infinitely more fun than Jays or Astros fans. Wow.

@jassond0minguez @YankeesFiles Genuine question. Before the 4-10 stretch they were 16-2. Does that stretch not count anymore? Was it all fake? Or do only the poor stretches mean something? It’s been frustrating but you can’t have it both ways.

@YankeesFiles Thoughts on them being 4-10 in last 14? You told me they were a good team liar.

@YankeesFiles the problem is the doomers want the yankees to play like the rays did that inning. they will ignore that all of this happened because of 2 errors. this would not have been an issue if the offense was not in the middle of a slump.

@RyanGarciaESM The cognitive dissonance from the pro-Jones crowd is so baffling to me it is funny. I guarantee if you made a Venn Diagram of people who thought Joey Gallo struck out too much and people who think Spencer Jones is getting stonewalled it would be one circle.

@YankeesFiles Looked it up because I thought there’d be something there and found this nugget: the Yankees are tied for 1st in the AL in getting shutout and scoring 10+ runs (5 times each) and we lead the AL in runs scored. Very weird shape to the season offensively.

@YankeesFiles His arm angle is 1 of 1, no one is particularly close in terms of angle or release height. Helps all his stuff move much differently than the rest of the league, which is making his fastball play up.

I sincerely hope that someday Yesavage is exposed as a gimmick fraud who the league has figured out. I fear he is way, way, way too good for that to happen.

@YankeesFiles @ejk666249656 You're arguing with someone who thinks the political affiliation of our starters is influencing their strong performance, this is an easy ignore. You don't need to feed the trolls.
