After more than 15 years since Saturday AM founder, Frederick L. Jones, left the video game industry, HE'S BACK! Sort of! SATURDAY AM BATTLE MANGA The 1st trailer of the game - now in development from Saturday AM's parent company, MyFutprint Entertainment, LLC & up and up-and-coming indie game studio, @SonStudiosGames This 2V2 fighting game has ambitious plans to offer a fast-paced experience with aesthetics that capture not only the feel of our award-winning manga experience but the diverse art styles & characters of our popular series ala -CLOCK STRIKER by Frederick L. Jones x @gladiskstudio -APPLE BLACK by our most popular creator & Saturday AM co-founder @WhytManga -HAMMER by @JeyOdin -SOUL BEAT by @SoulBeatManga With a planned 14 characters, popular & NEW voice actors, and some ambitious features to truly mimic the tic tac toe nature of the most iconic battle manga events of the past 20 years, Saturday AM BATTLE MANGA will continue my mission of helping to bring manga's globally diverse fandom -- closer to the art form by not just reading stories with characters who LOOK like them but PLAYING games with those same heroes. It's early. We have tons more to polish. And much more to show, so please be patient -- the plans are exciting and the indie games market is so strong that we're all focused on doing our best! In private showings at comicons, anime shows, & retailer chats -- the response has been overwhelmingly positive! So, let's go! WISH LIST ON STEAM NOW lnkd.in/eimcwsKm

LOVE. THIS. Our founder did an interview on Friday and talked about how too often social media focuses on the fantasy of the business and not the reality: It’s a business. And often not a profitable. Creating a hit series and living on it forever OUT THE GATE??? Isn’t likely. Likewise, just being online and not really doing cons or communicating with folks outside of your friend group & clique is NOT going to aid you in building a longterm business. It’s a job and promoting and fostering is as much of the work as creating comics.

Had a great conversation with some upcoming Indy comic creators about the business of comics tonight at #C2E2. We didn’t talk about creative process or influences, we talked about business and how to be successful in the long term. So many art schools offer little to no classes focusing on the business of being a commercial artist. This leads to 1000s of skilled artists graduating every year without any knowledge of contract negotiations, copyright/IP law, tax law, rate standards, marketing, or client relations. So many creators in comics don’t pay enough attention to the fact that this is a business and that largely, even creators for Marvel and DC, are on their own to ensure their security and longevity. Marketing, accounting, investing, and networking end up being just as important as creativity, skill, and storytelling when it comes to long term success. If you look at the current most famous\successful comic artists and writers, you can credit their artistic/creative skill and work ethic for their success but we have to realize that they’re also really skilled business people. They understood and embraced the part of the industry beyond the drawing board. We have to be our own marketing dept, accounting dept, legal dept, PR, promotion, engagement, and testing lab. Those that embrace this along with pushing themselves to created exciting engaging art end up flourishing. Those that only focus on the creative side while hoping/expecting the rest to take care of itself often find themselves frustrated, taken advantage of, and burnt out. Treat yourself like a business in between the times that you’re purely creative. In the end it’s all in support of your art while providing longevity and financial security.

Many!! We publish mostly Seinen & Shonen but looking to eventually publish more Josei, shojo, thrillers, romance, slice of life, mech, historical. Would love to see even more diverse settings and characters from Eastern European to Indian to Arabic to more distinct aspects of the black global experience. People love learning about Japanese and korea culture through their awesome media - we believe this applies to many other communities and want to help foster this.

So much in this statement. As our founder said recently on an interview - too many people want to make America into the Japanese market which is a disservice to reality (I.e. diversity sells in America while the country as a whole is less into reading - unfortunately - than many other nations) and it’s a disservice to Japan - which has built an influential model that works - in Japan. Interesting times are ahead.
Boichi@Boichi_Bo1

This may be a somewhat unfortunate observation, but the Japanese manga industry does not pay much attention to overseas markets. In a way, this situation is remarkably similar to Hollywood up until the 1980s. Hollywood films were global hits, yet their storytelling and visual style were clearly created primarily for American audiences and the domestic market. The reason becomes clear when you look at the revenue structure. The global manga market can be roughly divided into $5 billion in Japan’s domestic market and about $6 billion overseas. In terms of market size alone, the overseas market is actually larger than Japan’s domestic market. (Of course, the data may not be perfectly precise, and I appreciate your understanding.) However, from the perspective of mangakas, the situation looks very different. In Japan, royalties on tankōbon (collected volumes) are typically around 10%, whereas overseas royalties are usually only about 3%. This means that the total expected royalty income for Japanese manga artists is approximately: $500 million from the domestic market, but only about $200 million from overseas markets. (In reality, the situation is more complex—since not all domestic revenue comes from print volumes, and e-book royalty rates differ—but the overall conclusion remains the same: domestic earnings exceed $500 million.) If we look specifically at North America, the Japanese manga market there is about $1.1 billion, yet the expected returns to Japanese creators are only about one-fifteenth of what they earn in the domestic Japanese market. In short, while the overseas market is large, the income flowing back is relatively small. This is even more pronounced from the perspective of publishers. Because of this, Japanese manga—like Hollywood films before the 1990s—are not created with strong consideration for overseas audiences. Hollywood only began to seriously consider international audiences when direct distribution expanded in the 1990s. From that point on, the concept of “well-made” productions, designed for global appeal, began to emerge. Similarly, if Japanese manga begins to directly reach overseas markets through digital platforms, creators will naturally start to place greater importance on international readers. People often believe that works themselves shape the market—but in reality, it is usually the market that shapes the works and the mindset behind them. And in the 21st century, markets are shaped by VISION AND FORESIGHT. I recently saw an article suggesting that the Japanese government—specifically the Ministry of Education—is attempting a bold initiative in this direction. What will the future of manga look like? No one can say for certain. But it is clear that Japanese creators, readers, and publishers all need to begin preparing. Perhaps those who need to prepare the most are the existing overseas manga publishers. Every change is an opportunity. I hope you will keep that in mind and prepare for what lies ahead. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this long message. 5/5 P.S. I was planning to end this long message here, but as I was writing, a few more thoughts came to mind—so I’d like to continue a bit further.^^
