A new study by Liangle Yang and colleagues analyzed 472,615 participants from the UK Biobank. Over a median follow-up of 12.5 years, the findings suggest that glucosamine intake may be linked to a lower risk of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). New evidence shows that community-acquired pneumonia hospitalizations are linked to a substantial, sustained increase in the risk of developing new noncommunicable diseases over the course of 5 years after infection. Pulmonary diseases accounted for the largest excess burden an attributable risk increase of 7.2% and a number needed to harm (NNH) of 14. Cardiovascular and kidney diseases also contributed, with attributable risk increases of 5.7% and 3.3% (NNH 18 and 31, respectively). Frat et al.) compared high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) vs. standard oxygen in acute hypoxemic respiratory failure: Day‑28 mortality: 14.6% (HFNC) vs. 14.6% (standard) — difference −0.05 pp (95% CI −4.21 to 4.10; P=0.98). Intubation by day 28: 42.4% (HFNC) vs. 48.4% (standard) — difference −5.93 pp (95% CI −11.78 to −0.08).
