I recently came across this video on TikTok and knew I had to share it. I have always believed that a nation’s most potent export, and its greatest tourism magnet, lies within the creative industry: in its film, music, art, and raw expression. This video highlights how South Korea, even amidst the 1997 financial crash, made the radical decision to channel funding into cultural investments rather than pulling back. They bet on their identity, and that bet paid off. Today, K-Culture is a global titan, contributing an estimated $10 billion annually to South Korea’s GDP. To put its influence into perspective, 1 in every 13 tourists visits the country specifically because of the band BTS, while global hits like Squid Game and Parasite have driven a 200% increase in K-Drama viewership worldwide. With the @ikonawards, we want to replicate this reality for Uganda and the continent as a whole. Together, we can celebrate our own art while building the infrastructure to turn our creative talent into a global powerhouse. We are proving that our stories are not just for us, but for the world to see! #iKONAwards2026
