@thewealthster The Quest headset is pretty cool, they bought VR to the mainstream. They also maintain and popularized React, the biggest multiplatform programming language for mobile, lots of other apps (Like Chase, Monzo, Trainline) use it. And they open sourced Llama LLMs, was meaningful :D

If you work at Meta there is a near zero chance that anything you are doing is meaningful

Reading target for the year is 26, currently 3 down and on target, but my bedside table has a right old backlog!

Is it better to buy an ETF denominated in GBP and pay the 0.5% stamp duty or buy the USD ETF and pay the 0.02% IBKR FX fee? (I'm looking at VUAG.) I'm leaning toward the USD ETF to not pay stamp duty, what am I missing? #investing #Finance #UK

@Dad_on_FIRE Electric heat pump, LPG gas hob. We do have an LTE router with a SIM in it as a backup, maybe that would draw less power.

@SavingNinja Ah wow! Is your heating electric or gas? Could you manage without the Starlink and just tether for a few days? Could be a basic option and would bring a smaller battery into play

New toy to play with! Feeds into my prepping plans as well a generally being more self-reliant (aside from finances!). Potential to "work from beach" as well! Been eyeing one for a while and couldn't say no to a whopping £70 off voucher on Amazon amzn.to/3XVsaQP

@Dad_on_FIRE Apparently so! We're moving to rural Northumberland, we've been told they had a multi week outage in a recent winter and the army had to come and help - hopefully we wouldn't have one that long again or we'd be screwed either way 😂

@SavingNinja Hmm, yeah you're probably looking at about 2kwh per day for that stuff! Blanket and the Starlink the biggest draws so if you can use them sparingly then it would get you down a lot. Are multi-day power cuts common where you're moving to?

@Dad_on_FIRE I'd want to run a Gen 3 Starlink, router, a laptop and phones... Then probably an electric blanket at night to keep us warm in a multi-day outage.

@SavingNinja For smaller stuff then a power station. I'd make a list of what you need to power, which will right size the battery you need. You'd be able to charge the battery and charge a laptop from the panels at the same time.

@Dad_on_FIRE Yeah, but I'm not sure whether a generator would be better as our new place has propane tanks for the hob, so could hook into them - worried about getting the solar panels through a window and also not getting enough sun. The generators seem pricey though.

@SavingNinja Yeah mines only a baby compared to the one you're looking at! It could maybe run the slow cooker for 2-3 hours so not really practical. I've got other preps better suited for food/drinks anyway. This would keep the comms powered instead. You looking at panels as well?

One week in America, and it's been great, as always. Rich, safe, air-conditioning everywhere. Don't take too much notice of social media. I have gained weight though, obviously.

I've now got £45k stoozed on credit cards, all within 6 months!! Will help pay off the mortgage while we sell to avoid the 7.8% rate. Halifax Clarity 0% money transfer card was what allowed me to withdraw this amount of cash this quickly. This amount stoozed will save £300 p/m

@TotalBalanceGuy Yes, so tired! 😪 This place is a nightmare to move in/out of as well due to a narrow staircase. No idea where yet... But I have just been granted 6 months paternity leave, so we'll use that time to explore and decide.

@SavingNinja Yay for the moving back into the house! 🏠 Aren’t you a bit tired of moving by now? 😆 Any ideas which area you want to settle in “for good”? 🙂
