This is Chada, a 27-year-old rescued Himalayan brown bear
Chada was born on Christmas Day, December 24, 1998. From early childhood, she was sold to the National Circus of Ukraine, which was sadly common practice before European welfare standards were introduced. She spent twelve years on the road, living in travelling circuses and performing on tour.
Later, her owners abandoned her in a small, rusty cage in an industrial area of Bilogorodka near Kyiv. Chada remained there for the next seven years.
She was eventually noticed by animal welfare activists. At the time, no rehabilitation centres had available space, so she was temporarily moved to a private zoo in the village of Vasylivka in the Zaporizhia region. Although she was fed and cared for, the conditions were still unsuitable for a bear. Sadly, this zoo is now located in territory currently occupied by Russian troops.
On July 16, 2019, Chada finally arrived at the White Rock sanctuary.
Today, Chada has very poor eyesight and is missing eleven teeth. Despite everything she has endured, she has remained strong and full of spirit. Her resilience, personality, and love for life have made her a true star of our bear family.
