Last month marked the end of my time at @PetrasekLab at @UEBavcr in Prague. Huge thanks to everyone there for the support, guidance, and the wonderful family-like atmosphere!

It’s been a long but exciting journey — a few days ago I successfully defended my PhD thesis on the evolutionary origins of auxin action, carried out in the Petrášek Lab. Huge thanks to @Isabel_MonteG and @Bishopp_Lab for coming to Prague and for being such wonderful reviewers!

📣A new preprint from our group! No, this is not an image of some strange octopus but an anti-CbPINa staining in the antheridial filament of streptophyte alga Chara braunii. If you want to know more about auxin and PINs in Chara check out it at: biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

We’re thrilled to announce our phytohormone profiling study spanning the plant kingdom is now published in @NatureComms! Dive into an accessible summary in this thread by lead author @SchmidtVojtech. ⬇️

Some compounds we know as plant hormones are widespread in green algae. Check out our comprehensive phytohormone profiling of #streptophyte #algae and more, now published in @NatureComms 🧵⬇️ #phytohormones #evolution @PetrasekLab doi.org/10.1038/s41467…

@miret_javier In algae, we found ABA only at stationary phase, so it's not a complete absence in these, but still not consistent as in plants. Of course it might be accumulated upon certain stimuli. And if algae respond to ABA, it's not via the canonical plant pathway. pnas.org/doi/full/10.10…

[3/10: How?] Focusing on sterptophyte algae, we used LC/MS and laser spectroscopy for a detailed phytohormone analysis, with comprehensive sampling strategy including not only biomass, but also culture media and control (blank) media, accounting for excretion and background.

[10/10:] We hope this work will serve as a stepping stone for such follow up research. Check out the paper for full details and discussion: doi.org/10.1038/s41467…

[9/10: Prospects] It seems that the biosynthesis of phytohormone compounds likely predated their recruitment in signaling and metabolism in land plants. If some of these compounds have any (signaling) role in algae, or how they came to become plant hormones remains to be found.

[2/10: Why?] Until now, no systematic analysis of phytohormone occurence was performed throughout steptophyte algal lineages.
