I have one of those truly treatment-resistant and volatile cases of bipolar 1 disorder that finally, after 11+ years, stabilized because of a #KetogenicDiet. Remission seemed like a myth or, at best, a cruelly-unattainable state/goal. At my lowest and most suicidal…1/5

🧵Dr. Maya Schumer’s Story: A Neuroscientist’s Journey from Suicidality to Stability After 11 years of hospitalizations, suicidality, and treatment-resistant bipolar disorder, Dr. Maya Schumer, who holds a PhD in neuroscience, experienced something she never thought possible: Lasting stability. Here’s how she got there 👇 @SchumerMaya

Can a ketogenic diet really improve mental health? In this video, @bschermd breaks down a new piece published in @nytimes highlighting some of the existing early research looking at ketogenic therapy for serious mental illness alongside several success stories from members of the Metabolic Mind community. We are thankful to the many incredible researchers and practitioners who have helped pioneer the field of metabolic psychiatry, including those featured in this article like @ChrisPalmerMD, @ShebaniMD, and @IainCampbellPhD. We're also grateful to the many individuals who have been willing to openly share their personal experiences to inspire others who could benefit from ketogenic therapy.

Thank you for all that you do, Jan. No-one has been a stronger advocate for patients or has done more to advance research into genuinely new treatment modalities in psychiatry.

1/ Today, @alicegcallahan from the New York Times @nytimes published an article on ketogenic diets and serious mental illness. It feels fitting. (link below) It was exactly ten years ago today that our son @matthewbaszucki, at age 19, was involuntarily admitted to Stanford's psychiatric hospital for manic psychosis. After a diagnosis of Bipolar I and a five year battle with debilitating symptoms, he found @ChrisPalmerMD and started ketogenic and metabolic therapies. His symptoms have been in remission since early 2021, and today, he is still in ketosis and is thriving. I just had the pleasure of watching Matthew present his story on stage at @realCSF's #CoSci26 conference in Las Vegas. His health, vitality, confidence and insight brought me to tears. He also participated on a panel about his experience with other inspiring individuals @DrEricRodgers @robynrdobbins who appear in our upcoming film from @wideeyetv @jenisenhart @realDaveFeldman, The Cholesterol Code, which premiered last Saturday and received a well-deserved standing ovation. (link below) The Times article highlighted three of our family foundation @BaszuckiGroup's funded published studies (Stanford, The Ohio State University, and U. Edinburgh) and the stories of two individuals who, like our son, found hope in ketogenic therapy and who have generously shared their stories and strategies with @Metabolic_Mind's THINK+SMART program (links below). My fifth decade started as the hardest of my life and ended as the most rewarding. I am deeply grateful to the work of metabolic psychiatry pioneers @ChrisPalmerMD @GeorgiaEdeMD @SethiSheba74345 and others who made my son's healing possible, to the researchers around the world studying the connection between metabolic and mental health, and to our entire team at Baszucki Group and Metabolic Mind for their dedication to this cause. We're on the brink of a new era in the treatment of mental illness. Godspeed to the ongoing research, clinical adoption, and sharing of personal stories that could help tens of millions of people around the world.

Setbacks in mental health recovery aren’t failure; they’re part of the process. 🧠 In this video, Dr. Matt Bernstein explains why downturns are normal, how to prepare for them, and how the right mindset can turn challenges into growth in your mental health journey.

Just about everyone knows someone with a mental health condition who is not getting completely better with standard mental health care. New and innovative treatments should be embraced and encouraged. Millions of people are waiting and hoping.

Big moment for metabolic psychiatry and ketogenic therapy for serious mental illness. 🔗nyti.ms/4sj2WZD Today’s @nytimes piece highlights early research from Stanford University, The Ohio State University, and the University of Edinburgh — alongside the stories of individuals who have shared their lived experience here on Metabolic Mind. This kind of visibility matters. It reflects years of work by researchers and clinicians like @ChrisPalmerMD, @ShebaniMD, and @IainCampbellPhD, research funded by @BaszuckiGroup, advocates like @janellison, as well as the many people who have been willing to share their personal stories. Lived experience alone isn’t enough. Early data alone isn’t enough. But together, they point to something that must be tested, confirmed — or challenged — through high-quality science. That’s why we are excited about several RCTs currently completed or underway around the world. We need to continue efforts to advance education, public awareness and research on a scale that will require public funding. That’s how medicine moves forward. And that’s the exciting work ahead.

Great to see this @nytimes piece out—i shared my experience of using a ketogenic diet to stabilize my bipolar disorder. I agreed to try keto at the worst time in my life—peak suicidal/no hope—and it not only saved my life, it also helped create and sustain a different life…

…that I did not expect with bipolar disorder. Together with lithium, ketamine infusions, & TMS (medical pluralism!!), my illness has stabilized.   Understanding how the systems in those of us w/ SMI stabilize is just as important as understanding how they destabilize.

The latest @nytimes piece on ketogenic diet and mental health. It's a very reasonable overview, by @alicegcallahan and Christina Caron, of the history and current status of research, interviewing @SchumerMaya, @ChrisPalmerMD, @DrMinGAO and others. Thanks to the funding and support from @janellison, we will be seeing a lot more good evidence appearing soon. Link in first comment.

Can a keto diet "cure" serious mental illness? Here's my piece published today in @sfchronicle. "OPINION: Diagnosed with bipolar disorder, my son began a medically supervised ketogenic regimen — and it sent his symptoms into lasting remission, Jan Ellison Baszucki writes." To read the full oped, just enter your email when prompted for the gift link: tinyurl.com/3kwrcxyu In response to comments from HHS Secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., I share our family's story about how after half a decade of illness, ketogenic therapy has kept my son's bipolar I disorder symptoms in remission since 2021. I include the latest on the emerging science and practice of this therapeutic approach. "Has my son been 'cured'? It’s not a term we use in our work, and it’s also not the most important question. The more pressing concern is whether we are willing to rigorously test promising new treatment approaches when conventional care has failed far too many." @Metabolic_Mind @ChrisPalmerMD @BaszuckiGroup @matthewbaszucki @DavidBaszucki @metcoalition @LWSchizophrenia

For years I introduced myself as “a schizophrenia advocate living with schizoaffective disorder who will always need antipsychotics”. I built my identity – and my career – around that story. In my latest video I share the full arc: suicide attempts, psych ward stays, ECT, being told I had a lifelong brain disease, becoming the “good mental health patient"... and then discovering metabolic/ketogenic therapy, tapering off meds, and finding out who I am beyond a diagnosis. This is not about an anti-psychiatry rant, or a miracle cure. It’s a lived-experience look at how diagnoses become identities, how the mental health system can both save us and hold us back, and what it means to move beyond “good = compliant” toward something more human and honest. This is an adapted version of a speech I gave at the @_innercompass 'The Future of Mental Health in America' conference in December 2025.
