There’s nothing quite like the energy of a building full of people who love science as much as we do. Our snowflake is about to get a lot busier! ❄️ From April 28–30, Science North is hosting CASC 2026, the Canadian Association of Science Centres annual conference. We’re welcoming friends and colleagues from across the country to talk about the future of STEM in Canada. Our goal is simple: make everyone feel at home in Sudbury and ensure they leave our floors with their "Curiosity Unleashed." We’re ready to learn, share, and be inspired by the brightest minds in the Canadian science community. See you soon, CASC! 🙌 #CASC2026 #CuriosityUnleashed #Sudbury #ScienceCommunication #STEMCanada

Bigger isn't always better. 🧠 Your phone is way smaller than a 1980s computer, but it's thousands of times faster, right? Nature does the exact same thing with neural packing. While a moose carries around a lot of weight, some of our smaller northern neighbours are running much more complex software in a fraction of the space. 🐦‍⬛ What is something everyone associates with humans, but you saw a wild animal doing, and it blew your mind?

Science North’s newest scientist is… a bit over easy. 🍳🌎 Just in time for Earth Day, the Boiled Egg Scientist has officially arrived back on the Blue Planet to help us navigate the new experiences in our Space Place! She didn't come alone, either. She brought back a crew of cosmic Jellycat specimens from her travels, including a friendly Zyllan Alien, a Zodihop Luxe Bunny, and even Mars and the Amusable Space Comet. After you explore the moon like the Artemis II crew or test out our new gravity chairs, head over to Whizards to secure your own piece of the galaxy. There's no better day to celebrate our place in space! Tag a space (or Jellycat) fan who needs these in their collection! ☄️🪐

How much would you weigh on the Moon? 🌕 It’s time to find out! Our brand-new Gravity Chairs are officially open in Space Place on the 4th floor. Step into the shoes of an astronaut travelling through the solar system and feel the physical differences among Earth, Mars, and the Moon. Using a specialized pulley system, you’ll lift yourself up and experience the force of gravity outside of Earth. 🔴 Mars: Feel 1/3 lighter than you do on Earth. ⚪ Moon: Experience just 1/6 of Earth’s gravity—it’s the closest you’ll get to floating without leaving Sudbury! A built-in motor ensures a smooth, safe landing every time. This ingenious new exhibit was designed and built right here in town by the talented team at Cambrian R&D. Come test your strength (or lack thereof) and see if you have what it takes for a mission to Mars! 📍 Space Place (4th Floor), Science North 🎟️ Included with general admission!

Artemis II is undergoing the final countdown for splashdown. Tomorrow is the big day! 🚀🌊 After close to 10 days in space and a record-breaking loop around the Moon, the Artemis II crew is on their final approach to Earth. Tomorrow night, April 10, they’ll hit the atmosphere and aim for a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean. Getting back safely is the most intense part of the mission. Here is what the crew, including Canada's Jeremy Hansen, is facing in less than 24 hours: 🔥 THE FASTEST HUMANS IN HISTORY. As they hit the air, the Orion spacecraft will reach speeds of 40,000 km/h. That’s Mach 32 or 32 times the speed of sound! Faster than any human-carrying spacecraft has ever travelled. To put that in perspective, they’ll be moving fast enough to cross the entire width of Canada in about 10 minutes. It is also worth noting that astronauts returning from the International Space Station (ISS) travel at about 28,000 km/h. ☄️ THE ATMOSPHERIC SKIP. Because they’re coming in so fast, the ship will actually "skip" off the top of the atmosphere like a stone on water to slow down before the final descent. ☀️ HALF AS HOT AS THE SUN. Friction will heat the outside of the ship to 2,800°C, creating a glowing shield of plasma that will cut off all radio contact with Earth for several minutes of silent "blackout." While the crew prepares for the heavy pull of gravity tomorrow, we’re finishing up our own "gravity prep" here in Sudbury. Our brand-new gravity chairs on the 4th floor are undergoing fine-tune testing before launch. Stay tuned for the opening date! Did you know? The crew named their Orion capsule 'Integrity' to represent the foundation of trust behind this mission. We can’t wait to welcome them back to Earth! Will you be watching the live splashdown tomorrow night? 🌕

The upcoming Sensory Sunday on April 12 is at Dynamic Earth! If the usual crowds and noise make visiting a challenge, this is the perfect time to come by. We’re turning down the volume and adjusting the lights to make the whole building much calmer. What to expect on Sunday: 🪖 Underground Tours. We’ve modified the tour for a more relaxed pace. Lighting is adjusted, and sound effects (including the explosion) are turned down. If a sound can’t be changed, our Bluecoat guides will give you a clear warning first. 🎬 The Epiroc Theatre. No pre-shows or loud previews. We're screening Planting Hope) at lower volume, with the lights kept low rather than off. 🗣️ Nickel City Stories. We’re keeping the doors open for ambient light and lowering the audio. 💎 Lapidary Lab. While the lab is still running, it can get noisy. We’ll keep the doors closed and have a warning sign posted outside so there are no surprises. 🤫 Quiet Zones. If you need a break, we’ve set up dedicated sensory break spaces throughout the building. Sunday, April 12 📍Dynamic Earth We’re looking forward to a quieter day of exploring earth science and mining with you. See you underground!

We’re so proud to celebrate the first-ever Jane Goodall Day today! Join us in honouring a champion and our longtime partner, who taught the world that hope isn't just a feeling but something we create through action. To keep that spirit alive here in our community, Science North is hosting a FREE screening of our film Jane Goodall Reasons for Hope on Earth Day, April 22, at noon. Jane’s work shows us that even small local efforts lead to massive global change. Come find your own "reason for hope" in our IMAX theatre. April 22 @ 12:00 PM 📍 Science North IMAX Theatre 🎟️ Admission: FREE but tickets must be reserved (First come, first served) 🔗 sciencenorth.ca/imax

The Hunt is on! 🔍 If you’re visiting us this long weekend, look a little closer inside our buildings. Both Science North and Dynamic Earth are full of "Easter eggs" that many people walk right past. Can you find these two? 📍 Science North: Most people know about the tunnel, but the real "Easter egg" is the black stripe on the floor near the elevator and ramp. It marks a massive geological feature know as the Creighton Fault! A fault forms when big pieces of rock deep underground slowly move in different directions. When you’re standing on that black stripe, you’re standing right on the Creighton Fault — but don’t worry! It’s an inactive fault, so it will not move. 📍 Dynamic Earth: Head 7 storeys down into the Canadian Shield to find our underground mailbox. You can buy a postcard at the Big Nickel Boutique, write your message, and drop it in the box while you're on the underground tour. It’s one of the few places in the world where you can have a letter mailed out with a unique "Underground" postmark. It’s a literal "Easter egg" you can send to a friend! What other "Easter eggs" can you spot at our science centres? (Hint: Look for the evidence of the big impact in the tunnel or the date on the Big Nickel!) We are open all long weekend! In fact, we’re open on every holiday of the year except for December 25, 26, and January 1. #ScienceNorth #DynamicEarth #Sudbury #EasterLongWeekend #DiscoverSudbury
