Aren’t computers up to the task? Sometimes – but people are much better at pattern recognition than computers, and biology is inherently variable, making these images particularly tricky. Combining #citizenscience with #artificialintellingence helps make computers better too.

Why do we need citizen science? Take #PlacentaProfiles for example: our #volunteers picked out 2.23M potential mitochondria in just 18 months – a number that would take a single researcher years to match. The #power of the #crowd indeed 💪
