The Sinking of the HMS Dasher, Firth of Clyde, Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 #1 - The Facts 83 years ago today, an escort carrier called HMS Dasher was carrying out flying exercises in the waters between Ardrossan and the Isle of Arran. In the span of just a few minutes, two massive explosions tore through the ship - the huge aircraft carrier was blasted 60 feet into the air, the wooden flight deck buckled and caved in, and enormous fires took hold. Within eight minutes, the Dasher had completely slipped beneath the waves, bow pointing skyward. Out of 528 men on board, 379 were lost that afternoon. Many who made it into the water died from burns or the freezing cold. The worst part about this disaster was that no enemy action was involved, it was completely self inflicted. It remains one of the worst naval disasters in British home waters during the whole of the Second World War. Yet, for decades, almost nothing was said about it in public. Families were left with very few answers, they were even paid off and told "never speak of this," and even today some details still don't add up.
