Okay, hear me out: it is a Texas truism that the sketchier the circumstances in which you buy them, the better the tamales. The best tamales you will ever eat will be made by somebody's tía and bought from the trunk of an old car in a store parking lot. Further, the junkier the car, the better the tamale. The seediness of the store matters, too, with tamales purchased in a Home Depot parking lot not nearly as tasty as those bought from a rundown mom-and-pop convenience store in Seguin. After driving across a good chunk of West Texas over the past few days, I am blown away by how good most crops look, considering the time of year it is! Even dryland crops look pretty good! The rain has been a blessing this year.
