Early December 1776. When the Continental Army was safely across the Delaware River into Pennsylvania, the artist Charles Willson Peale arrived with a Philadelphia militia unit in answer to Washington’s call for help. Peale thought the army looked as wretched as any men he had ever seen. One man who was with a Maryland unit as part of the rear guard had almost no clothes. He was in an old dirty blanket jacket, his beard long, and his face full of sores. Charles didn’t recognize his own brother, James.

Raise a quaich to #StAndrewsDay! A quaich is a shallow, two-handled drinking vessel. This quaich in our collection descended from Thomas McKean, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and member of the St. Andrew's Society of Philadelphia. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿: bit.ly/4iIAj3h

@AmRevMuseum Except for the American flag on one soldier's arm, they look like Soviet soldiers and their propaganda of the time. The artist worked for the Office of War Information which, perhaps not coincidentally, was riddled with Russian spies.

The Commander in Chief’s Standard, on view at the Museum, appeared on a US military recruitment poster during World War II. Artist Bernard Perlin used American soldiers as models for the painting from which the poster was produced. #DDay81 Our collection: bit.ly/4aNTNPh

"I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!" #OnThisDay in 1775, Patrick Henry delivered his famous speech. In our collection, we have five 18th-century English law books listed in Henry’s estate inventory: bit.ly/316e8xJ

#OnThisDay in 1818, the War Pension Act was signed to address care for veterans 35 years after the Revolutionary War. More than 80,000 veterans applied for pensions. 📽️ Watch three living veterans read the military pensions of Revolutionary War soldiers: bit.ly/473TChs

The marvel of long-distance #Viking trade networks: These whole Samanid dirhams were also part of the Storr Rock hoard, meaning they survived a journey from Central Asia to the Isle of Skye in almost perfect condition!

This #Viking hoard was deposited c. 935-40 near Storr Rock, Skye. A microcosm of vast Viking networks, it includes Samanid dirhams (some as late as 932!), Danelaw and Ang-Sax coins, Hiberno-Scand hacksilver, and a 'Permian' spiral ring from eastern Europe or Southern Scandinavia.

The laying a country desolate with fire and sword, declaring war against the natural rights of all mankind, and extirpating the defenders thereof from the face of the earth, is the concern of every man to whom nature hath given the power of feeling.” Thomas Paine, Common Sense
