The Green Party are on the cusp of being the leading political party in the polls. Felt pretty emotional to get this reception from thousands of educators and support staff. The tide is turning - let's do this! 💚 Join.greenparty.org.uk

Something new and uncomfortable is happening on parts of the British right. Religion is being rediscovered. Not as faith. As a political weapon. 1. Figures like Nigel Farage, Robert Jenrick and Tommy Robinson are increasingly framing politics in civilisational terms. Christianity vs. something else, Britain as a religious identity under threat. 2. But this isn’t a revival of faith. It’s a repurposing of it. Christianity is being used less as a belief system and more as a cultural marker. A way of drawing lines around identity. 3. That matters because it is, at its core, selective. The language of “Christian values” appears most often in opposition to immigration, to Islam, to social change. It is rarely accompanied by any serious engagement with the actual religion itself. 4. Genuine faith is inconvenient. It asks for consistency, humility, moral discipline. Political rhetoric is not. It is flexible, opportunistic and used when useful. 5. Which is why the current trend feels less like Reform have found God and more like hypocrisy. Religion is being used as shorthand for belonging, not as a guide to conduct. 6. There is also a clear political incentive. Framing issues in civilisational or religious terms raises the stakes instantly. It turns policy debates into existential struggles, where compromise looks like surrender. The irony is obvious. Many of the loudest voices invoking Christianity are not known for deep religious observance. The appeal isn’t theological. It’s tribal. 7. And that has consequences. Once politics is framed in these terms, it becomes harder to have serious discussions about policy such as migration, integration and housing because everything is recast as identity conflict. It also risks degrading religion itself. When faith becomes a political prop, it loses credibility as a moral force. Religion has always had a place in British public life. But there is a difference between faith shaping politics and politics exploiting faith. What we are seeing now looks much more like the latter.

@davidandrewt Erm, none of them.. I am quite happy being part of London. I am still waiting an answer to my questions to Reform as to what benefits we see by being part of Essex. Weirdly they don’t answer and just throw insults at me 🤷‍♂️😄

@WendyWendyjd @novaramedia London has local elections in May, people can choose to vote them out and put Labour back in, so in this case I would say it’s ok. Generally I agree though, a defection should mean a by-election.

@novaramedia Still don’t understand why this does not drive a bi election. People probably voted for a Labour councillor and so should be able have the chance to retain that !

BREAKING: Sitting Labour Councillors in Lewisham, Rudi Schmidt and Tauseef Anwar announce that they have defected to the Green Party. Councillor Schmidt said the following to Novara Media: " I really respect my Labour Party colleagues and listen, there's a lot of hard-working and caring councillors, but what's wrong with the Labour Party really is the national party and the grip it has across local councils. There's developed like a fear, a culture of fear, the fear of speaking out on injustice, as fear of speaking out against austerity, a fear of speaking out against the Labour Party's complicity in Gaza, and I think that almost all authoritarian way of operating has filtered down to local councils"

Claiming that communism doesn't work because the US has been able to successfully strangle Cuba is like claiming you're a better person than your neighbor because you were able to shoot him in his driveway.
Tosca Austen@ToscaAusten

🔦Cuba just went DARK—total nationwide blackout, millions in the pitch black, no lights, no fans, in the ‘workers’ paradise.’ This is what happens when 67 years of communism finally runs out of Venezuelan oil… and Trump slams the door shut on the rest. US fuel cutoff + crumbling socialist grid = lights OUT. @POTUS Trump: ‘Cuba’s a failed nation… something will happen pretty quickly.’ Just 90 miles from Florida, a communist dictatorship crumbling under maximum pressure. No more propping up tyrants with our weakness. Make Cuba libre REAL. Trump is delivering after decades of talk. Socialism fails.

@RichardStWolf @SophieP25397 Sounds pretty similar to today’s situation to be honest, question is how do we fix it? Or we could all continue blaming one another while the rich keep laughing and getting richer. Maybe a big shift away from neoliberalism is what’s needed now.

@SophieP25397 When Margaret Thatcher took over as Prime Minister in May 1979, the United Kingdom was widely regarded as "the sick man of Europe," suffering from severe economic instability, industrial chaos, and a prevailing sense of national decline. I could go on . But just google it

This is insane. I obviously have a position on this, but forget that for a second. Just from a basic democracy perspective, you simply cannot make a fundamental change to the immigration system that cuts immigration from similar cultures (i.e. EU migratjon) to zero while exponentially increasing migration from cultures massively different without public buy in. You cannot sneak something in like this through the backdoor without a public debate Look, if an election was fought on this, if one party said "we want to massively increase the number of foreigners with a different culture and different religion, while will inevitably change the culture and demographics of the country " as their election platform, and then they won and enacted that policy, I wouldnt like it, but i would accept it. If thats what the people want, even though I disagree, I accept it. Thats democracy. But they didnt do that. Instead, they snuck a wholesale change to immigration policy in through the backdoor, and hoped you wouldnt notice. And when you did, they gaslit you and called you racist. And when the rape rate went parabolic, and ppl started noticing they didnt recognize the towns they grew up in, and ppl complained on social media, they brought in the jack boots and started hauling grandmothers out of their beds at 2 AM for making posts critical of immigration policy. This is not democracy and there is somethibg very insidious about all of this. Why did they do it? Because "economics"? None of this makes any sense.

I cannot believe the abuse Hannah Spencer has been getting on here today. Abuse that’s been off the scale and from the very worst twisted, bitter, inadequate and jealous bullies - both male and female. These absolute cretins clearly didn’t see Hannah’s victory speech in the early hours of that Friday morning when the #GortonAndDentonByElection result was announced. A brilliant, extraordinary speech that nailed the reasons why Labour and Reform lost. Even more startlingly, she made it clear that there’s now barely any tangible difference between Labour and Reform. They cruelly mock her clothes, the way she has her hair, they call her a clown and a CBeebies child. But they say these things because they have absolutely nothing to counter her political arguments. And that’s the crux of the problem with bullies - they hate your intelligence, your endeavours, your talent and your basic decency. I’ve just came across this interview with Hannah Spencer on the Facebook reels and, again, was taken by just how articulate she is in spelling out why so many people are disenchanted with The Labour Party. I hope she continues as she’s started. Don’t listen to the haters, Hannah. Be yourself and with every word keep making it clear why Labour is finished under Starmer’s draconian, authoritarian and sleaze-ridden leadership. @TheGreenParty @UKLabour facebook.com/share/r/19rWK7…

I can't believe that people still fall for this rubbish. North Sea oil costs ≈ $60+ to produce a barrel. Middle East oil costs ≈ $10-$20. The North Sea is known as a mature oil province — it's production peaked in 1999-2000 and has steadily declined ever since. Even if new drilling began, the production levels would fall and the costs would rise. It's an absolute non-starter. Reform UK know this, but they'll keep lying to you about it regardless. 🤦‍♂️
Robert Jenrick@RobertJenrick

It is economic lunacy to ignore our rich energy reserves. Reform will unapologetically drill in the North Sea for oil and gas. We’ll get bills down and bring back good jobs.

Remember when people raged about the Queen or mainstream female MPs wearing bright colours? 🤷‍♀️ Nope. Because people didn’t care. 👎 In fact, the Queen was admired for it. The moment any woman like Hannah challenges hate & unfairness while wearing a joyful outfit, her clothing choice suddenly becomes an outrage. 😠 The “free women to dress as they like’ crowd only means it when the woman fits their politics. Hypocrisy much? 💅

@2Sides_1Story @Paulie_Cashews I’d say just have the correct decision in the first place that doesn’t result in a u-turn, it’s probably the least we should expect from a PM. Unfortunately the standard of politicians is awful at the moment.

I am tired. Tired of war. Tired of anger. Tired of death. Tired of lives lost. Tired of hope destroyed. Tired of unnecessary grief. Tired of the destruction of well-being. Tired of forced migration. Tired of tears. Tired of children living in tents, denied the childhood they deserve. I am tired of the political excuses offered for war. I am tired of racial hatred. I am tired of human lust for power wrapped up in theocracy. I am tired of talk of defence that excuses aggression. I am tired of biased reporting I am tired of being told that people who have died on one side of a dispute are lives lost and that on the other, they are just killed. I am tired of a failure to recognise that any life lost unnecessarily is just that: it is a life lost unnecessarily. I am tired of the belief that war will ever solve anything. I am tired of the assumption that after war everything will go back to normal. I am tired of the cost of conflict always being borne by anyone but those who started it. I am tired of those who think we don’t have a duty of care to everyone, whoever they are, wherever they come from, whatever they believe, whatever their skin colour, whatever their gender, whatever their age. I am tired of those who think that others don’t matter. Most of all, I am tired of those who destroy hope, I live in hope. Hope of a better day. Hope of a better life for everyone. Hope that I might live to see that. Hope that everyone might then share hope. Is that too much to hope for?
