No, they are responsibilities of officials put in place by the AFL. The clubs can only operate under the info they are provided at the time.

AFL Interchange Official duties include monitoring, approving, calculating and communicating the number of interchanges. Stewards roles are mostly conduit between club and AFL officials. It's an official AFL guidelines 2026 document which outlines countless AFL processes not covered by the laws of the game and some of them in more detail. You can find it under AFL policies on the AFL website.

@Jimara73 @laurensm1ith @XanderMcGuire7 @7NewsMelbourne Club stewards are not there to count/tally the interchanges, they are there to make sure players come on and off using the gates correctly. The AFL officials are the ones who keep the official tally.

@maxlaughton The thing about expected score is that the actual score changes how the game unfolds. If a team is “wrongly” up by 5 goals it plays very differently to one that is behind. Very shaky stat.

Adem Yze talking about process over results and basically referring to expected score in his presser, saying they shouldn't have won this game last year but should've won this year. (And he has directly mentioned expected score before.) A coach after my own heart ❤️

Hawthorn’s defence and forward lines are both in very 💪 shape. There is elite talent and quality role players across both lines. The midfield, however..❓ After missing on Harley Reid, Zach Merrett and a number of midfielders in the draft, Hawthorn’s midfield/wing unit heading into 2026 will be: Jai Newcombe ⭐️ 💪 Will Day 🤕 Connor Nash ⬆️ & ⬇️ Josh Ward 📈 Cam Mackenzie ❓ Massimo D’Ambrosio ⬆️ and ⬇️ Harry Morrison 🤷‍♂️ Josh Weddle ❓ Depth: Henry Hustwaite Cody Anderson Jack Dalton Ollie Greeves Cam Nairn Matt LeRay As it stands, I’m not sure the current midfield mix and depth is not going to be strong enough to compete with the top teams consistently next season. Brisbane and Geelong aren’t falling. Gold Coast will be hard to beat as will Adelaide, GWS and Fremantle. Don’t forget Sydney. They will be back next season. There’s also the Bulldogs & even St Kilda who will likely improve as well. Who knows about Collingwood. With James Worpel departing, there’s a spot up for grabs in the midfield. Cam Mackenzie, who finished last season in the VFL should get the first opportunity. He needs a massive pre-season. Year number 4 in the system. No more excuses. Henry Hustwaite could also be an option with a big pre-season. Sam Mitchell and his team of coaches are going to have to spin the 🧲 around in the midfield over the coming months! Time to get creative! Expect to see Dylan Moore, Nick Watson & Sam Butler spending more time in the midfield. Connor MacDonald may also be an option. Is Josh Weddle’s best role on the wing?
