@lilusdivert Overhead on grants is a great point that the average person doesn't know, as is that many schools own a significant portion of any patent a student produces while there.

you're an idiot and also clearly don't actually know what it is to be a grad student. We can't have outside jobs, we are expected to be in class or in the lab full time (& more!), and we do the work that makes the university run. They get overhead off of our grants. Fuck you

The notion that grad students can't make ends meet is absolutely ridiculous to me. I live a mile away from Harvard. I am essentially a grad student with no stipend and no support. I'm making it work. Why can't they? The people who this screws are me -- marginal admits.

@RuxandraTeslo None of the unfunded PhD students finished in my cohort. It sure seemed like years of their life were wasted by a system that had no problem just taking their money and leaving them poorer. Not taking unfunded students would be a kindness for most.

Now I need to make a post about how Decker is wrong. I think academia would be far better off with less PhD students that were paid better. There are already too many PhDs!

This is obviously demagoguery, but to be clear, packing the Court to 13 Justices would destroy the independent judiciary and make the courts the political tool of whoever won the last electoral trifecta, while sending the rest of US law into chaos.

@QuestionAbyss Depends who you ask. a platonist thinks abstract things like numbers actually exist and we have discovered them rather than invented them. I don't know. Did we discover blue or did we invent the category and description to suit our own system of organizing our observations?

@QuestionAbyss I think of it as the inverse- if no existence, there would be no one to notice or ask why. This is the binary state in which the question exists. That's not "why," but it is an explanation of sorts- existence is the only way of being.
