@lilusdivert Overhead on grants is a great point that the average person doesn't know, as is that many schools own a significant portion of any patent a student produces while there.

you're an idiot and also clearly don't actually know what it is to be a grad student. We can't have outside jobs, we are expected to be in class or in the lab full time (& more!), and we do the work that makes the university run. They get overhead off of our grants. Fuck you
Nicholas Decker@captgouda24

The notion that grad students can't make ends meet is absolutely ridiculous to me. I live a mile away from Harvard. I am essentially a grad student with no stipend and no support. I'm making it work. Why can't they? The people who this screws are me -- marginal admits.

@Jess_inthewild I dont know if I would quit supporting entirely but it would be disappointing and negatively affect my involvement if there was plainly a lack of humanity in their communications.

Be honest - if you clock that an org you support is using ChatGPT in its regular emails, social media, fundraising asks, etc. or generative AI, would this make you no longer support that org?

@RuxandraTeslo None of the unfunded PhD students finished in my cohort. It sure seemed like years of their life were wasted by a system that had no problem just taking their money and leaving them poorer. Not taking unfunded students would be a kindness for most.

Now I need to make a post about how Decker is wrong. I think academia would be far better off with less PhD students that were paid better. There are already too many PhDs!

Friendly ice breaker: “if you could be anyone in history for a day, who would you be?” I go first and say Neil Armstrong 1969 or Jesus on the day of his crucifixion. Next person says Taylor Swift. Everyone else says a pop star or celebrity. Yep. Killing myself

I had a dream last night was that I was carrying an enormous tray of spaghetti and meatballs across a really long distance of a building, and I kept spilling endless meatballs and spaghetti everywhere I went. And every time I tried to scoop up what I spilled it just spread more.

@BrennonChapman Should you not weight the enrollment % to the state demographics? Mississippi is 37% black. Some of these states have proportionally half or a third of that.

Lane keeps taking his childish shots at Ole Miss, but the data doesn’t back him up. Black student % in the SEC: Mississippi State: No. 2 Ole Miss: No. 4 Ole Miss ranks ahead of 12 SEC schools. State ranks ahead of 14. Pretending we aren’t diverse is disingenuous at best.

@dilanesper How could one tell if the independent judiciary were destroyed and the courts were a political tool, hypothetically? Asking for every friend.

This is obviously demagoguery, but to be clear, packing the Court to 13 Justices would destroy the independent judiciary and make the courts the political tool of whoever won the last electoral trifecta, while sending the rest of US law into chaos.
Rep. Ro Khanna@RepRoKhanna

The Supreme Court has engaged in an ugly recidivism that has marked the fastest rollback of Black political rights since Reconstruction. 18 year terms limits on Justices now. Expand the court from 9 to 13 Justices now.

@QueenMab87 I think you'll be fine. It isn't hard to pick up and learn if you ever do find a need. I don't know why people pretend like writing a prompt is any different than giving a very dim person a specific request.

@QuestionAbyss Because math and logic are descriptive tools removed from fancy and belief. That's what is beyond our subjective experiences- a universe structured by consistent properties and values all interacting over time. We imagine magic to fill gaps. The universe just exists. No magic.

@QuestionAbyss And why did a group like the ancient greeks have no word for blue, either way? What the fuck? Why was orange just a type of red until a few hundred years ago? I don't know, but I think math and colors share the answer to your question.

@QuestionAbyss Depends who you ask. a platonist thinks abstract things like numbers actually exist and we have discovered them rather than invented them. I don't know. Did we discover blue or did we invent the category and description to suit our own system of organizing our observations?

@QuestionAbyss I think of it as the inverse- if no existence, there would be no one to notice or ask why. This is the binary state in which the question exists. That's not "why," but it is an explanation of sorts- existence is the only way of being.
