Congrats to @SeabirdLady who will be submitting her MSc dissertation for examination today. It is a great piece of work which will contribute to Cape gannet conservation efforts.

An article on my Msc study

Cape gannets are known to be relentless predators as they plunge into the ocean from great heights to snap up fish. But they are themselves subject to predation by seals and kelp gull. Researcher Zanri Schoeman shared her findings here: bit.ly/2ZCxDeo. #CapeNature20

@AlbyTaskForce Sorry for the inconvenience but I cannot seem to find the option of sending you a private message. I relly would like to gather the SA Fosheries details from you. What is the best way to contact you from here on? Thanks for being willing to help, I greatly appreciate it
English

@SeabirdLady Just send a private message and we can speak next week. I’m away at a fish meeting this week. 😀

@SeabirdLady #WSTC5 agreed that #fisheries management is central to this issue and #seal culling is not a long term solution. Are you in touch with fisheries on the issue? #ConsSesh2

There are lots of eggs on Coquet..........to potentially stand on, so these new marker stones for paths should help stop any casualties! @Natures_Voice @RSPB_N_England @RoseateTernLIFE @NEE_Naturalist

@AlbyTaskForce Wow thank you very much, we would really appreciate that. How can I contact you about their details? Alternatively I can be contacted at s213259966@mandela.ac.za
Thanks again, really.

@SeabirdLady We have some contacts in South African fisheries if that would help you?
English

@agnesbirgitta Thanks for asking. Fish stocks are driven by regime shifts in the environment and fishing pressure thus solutions: increase the num of and/or expand marine protected areas, have the laws better enforced, and decrease the fish quotas (but with that comes other consequences).

4/4 #WSTC5 #ConsSesh2 │During years with reduced #fish biomass increased #seal predation was experienced, therefore, we suggest that #management focus should be on fish #conservation rather than #predator control measures.

English

3/4 #WSTC5 #ConsSesh2 │Increased #predation was related to the likelihood of the years in which #predator control occurred. Predator control decreased the predation on an #intra-annual scale but the effect thereof on an #interannual scale was negligible.
