I’ve just driven past five young men from local asylum accommodation walking past a secondary school as the pupils were coming out. Three of the men had their hands down their trousers, playing with themselves. I’d suggest that’s not the sort of cultural enrichment we want.

You do not see this every day! s.1(4) of the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act, 1992, should mean there is no question of the defendant being anonymous. Yet it took @SeanAxtell making very persuasive arguments in court to ensure open justice was upheld in this case #journalism

@MarkHannaMedia @CharlieMoloney It prompted the defence to argue against the ruling under Subsec 3 but the judge ploughed on and discharged anyway.

@MarkHannaMedia @CharlieMoloney Cheers Mark. I caught the trial's tail end - classic - so missed initial arguments about anonymity, still unsure why Sec 1(4) hadn't kicked in. But judge discharged under Act’s Sec 3(2) following an adverse verdict and press representations.

And by the time the case can be heard in December, the defendant may have died following a battle with cancer.

I've just sat through a sensitive sexual abuse hearing, which can't progress now, because Canterbury Crown Court can't afford to fix its lift for a disabled defendant.
