Official Statement – Councilmember Sean C. Novack
Residents of Ward 3:
I want to acknowledge that some of you are feeling anxious about recent federal enforcement activity in the region. Fear and uncertainty deserve to be taken seriously.
I need to be very clear about my position. The City of Coon Rapids does not have authority over federal law enforcement operations. Issuing statements or taking positions on matters outside our jurisdiction is not harmless. It creates confusion, raises expectations the City cannot meet, and can unintentionally increase fear and risk in the community.
For that reason, I do not believe city councilmembers should be issuing statements on federal enforcement activity. My responsibility is to focus on what we can actually govern — public safety within our city at the municipal level, essential services, and maintaining stability — not symbolic actions that carry real consequences without producing real outcomes.
I support lawful, professional conduct by all law enforcement agencies, and I also support the right of residents to express their views peacefully. I will remain focused on actual city responsibilities rather than symbolic actions that do not change outcomes or improve safety.
I would also encourage everyone engaging in this discussion to take care with both facts and tone. These are serious issues, and inaccurate claims or overheated rhetoric can unintentionally increase fear and tension without improving understanding or safety.
