Always fascinated when people try to take obviously public events in front of crowds off record.
Special place in my heart for the Bank of England flak who called me to say that Eddie George's memorial service in St Paul's had been off the record.

I was looking forward to interviewing Boris Johnson at Cheltenham, but regrettably I can’t go ahead with the event because I am not allowed make an audio recording or transcript of the interview. As a journalist in conversation with a former PM at a public event, I can only proceed if we do it on the record. I’m sorry to have to pull out.

Some sensible points about why suspending judgment and jumping on every anti-Reform story just because you want it to be true, even when it’s clearly nonsense, is a dead end

This needs to be kept in mind when criticising Reform, who follow the same playbook. Reform will use the 'fake AI candidate' story to undermine their electorate's confidence in other negative news stories in future, even when those stories are fully evidenced.
