It takes up to 10 days to replenish, leaving the skunk completely defenseless against predators in the meantime. That spray is its only protection. It doesn't want to waste it on you. Before it sprays it will warn you. Stomping feet. Raised tail. It turns its back toward you. It is telling you to please leave. Back away slowly and you will not get sprayed. Almost everyone who gets sprayed ignored all three warnings. Give it space. Let it work.
