When Declan’s seizures became life-threatening, his parents faced an incredibly difficult decision. Erin, Declan’s mom, remembers sitting in the pre-op room questioning everything as Declan experienced two seizures within 30 minutes. With the guidance of the care team at Seattle Children’s, they chose to move forward with surgery. Erin still keeps the photo from the day she walked out of the hospital with Declan. At just 4 months old, Hermann underwent bloodless open-heart surgery to repair a complete unbalanced atrioventricular septal defect — one of the most complex congenital heart conditions. Home to the nation’s leading blood conservation program, Seattle Children’s offers families the option to avoid blood products for cultural, religious or personal reasons.
