Sotg isn’t inherently as bad as people think. But the way it’s used can be annoying, helpful, malicious, or anywhere in between. Nothing in the rules says you have to be friends with your opponent. And “joy of play” is expressed differently from athlete to athlete.

There were a couple of instances of prolonged (about a minute) conversations resulting in a retraction or no-contest. Often you'll know when it's time to agree to disagree and send it back, but sometimes the conversation actually is worth it.

Time and time again, especially at D-III, I saw players pull up from potential dangerous plays and give up their play on the disc. You could make a highlight reel of all the times players consciously made decisions to keep people safe, at the expense of playing the disc.

Sharing some self-officiation–related observations from D-III and D-I nationals here. Just gonna keep spitting them out as they come to me. First, when the disc goes out the side of the end zone, people are setting their pivots like a yard in bounds. And no one is calling it.
