I watched a junior network engineer try to debug a firewall rule. He logged into a server. He installed telnet. He typed telnet 10.0.0.45 443. It timed out. He shrugged and said the port was closed. I asked him if he enjoyed wasting time or just hated accurate data. He looked confused and said telnet was standard. I told him telnet tests a service, not a firewall. The service could be down. The firewall could be blocking. He wouldn't know the difference. I showed him nmap -v -p 443 10.0.0.45. It returned filtered. I told him telnet costs us 45 minutes of confusion per outage. I deleted telnet from the server and forced him to write a bash script using /dev/tcp for his health checks.

Wait, all of you asking for location you want to boycott me? 🤣 what do I get for plugging you?
