There's a clay tablet with the founding charter of a 12-partner company on it. Twelve merchants pooled 33 pounds of gold to start the firm. The contract has the partner names, the starting capital, the profit split, and the penalty for cashing out early. The tablet is nearly 4,000 years old. It was found at a site called Kanesh, in central Turkey. Archaeologists have dug up 23,500 of these clay records there, most of them business documents: receipts, loan contracts, shipping orders, lawsuits. The houses they were stored in eventually burned. The fire baked the clay solid and preserved every record. The merchants came from Assur, in modern-day Iraq. They loaded donkeys with tin and cloth and walked them 1,000 kilometers across mountain passes to Kanesh, roughly the distance from New York to Atlanta. Each donkey carried about 180 pounds and the trip took two to three months. They came home with silver and gold. The company ran for twelve years under a merchant named Amur Ishtar. A third of the profits went back to the investors. Pull your share out early and the firm gave you four kilos of silver per kilo of gold, half the normal rate. Locked-up money was meant to stay locked up. That one company was just a tiny piece. The tablets show a complete economy with partners suing each other in commercial court, husbands writing home about prices, and wives writing back complaining the husband had been gone too long. A woman named Ahatum quietly lent silver to four different men over nine years. People bought up other people's loan documents and used them as collateral for new loans, the same thing Wall Street does today with mortgage-backed securities. One merchant got caught smuggling tin in his underwear to dodge a 10% import tax. In 2019, four economists from Harvard, Sciences Po, Chicago, and Virginia ran the tablet numbers through a gravity model, the math economists use today to predict how much two countries will trade based on size and distance. The Bronze Age numbers matched modern trade numbers almost exactly. Trade fell off with distance at nearly the same rate it does between countries today. The paper ran in the Quarterly Journal of Economics. There was no economic theory yet. The idea didn't even have a name. The word "capitalism" wouldn't be coined for another 3,800 years, and Adam Smith was 3,700 years away from writing a sentence about markets. Just a guy named Pushu-ken writing a clay tablet to his business partner about a shipment of cloth, and a woman in Assur recording who owed her how much silver. Capitalism was already there, doing its full job, almost four thousand years before anyone wrote down a theory of how it worked.

If you’re claiming someone is underpaid, then you should also be able to say what the correct pay is and how you arrived at that number. So how do you figure that out? And if an unemployed person is willing to do the same job for less money and longer hours, why exactly should I keep paying the current employee more?

There is a reason authoritarians censor first and justify it later. When words are treated as violence, actual violence starts to look like self-defense. And that’s just societal regression with better branding.
Greg Lukianoff tweet media
Greg Lukianoff@glukianoff

Why does free speech have a “branding problem”? Part of it is simple. Once an institution becomes ideologically one-sided, it stops needing free speech and starts seeing it as a threat. That’s what I watched happen on campuses. A slow-motion train wreck.

The people who think society, which in practice means the government, should own your children will justify it based on the fact that some parents are in fact abusive, then never consider that someone totally unrelated to a child with power over them is a much greater risk. We see this with step-parent abuse stats. It would likely be even worse with random strangers who don’t even have a relationship with one of the biological parents. This way of reasoning - something bad could happen under the current system, so let’s radically change it without acknowledging that something bad could also happen, and is more likely, under the new proposal - basically defines modern leftism. Fundamentally it’s just neuroticism. They can’t accept that the best system will still be imperfect, so they squeeze their fist ever tighter. Failing the finger trap.

Since she linked me: nope. I am a ~professional statistician - stats prof at a state university. This and similar data sets are extremely easy to interpret. Almost all look simply at liberal vs conservative affiliation or party affiliation. Women shifted 23 points to the left. Men shifted 1 point to the right. You cannot respond to this fact simply by saying "Well - the left is GOOD!" Come on.
Hannah Cox@HannahDCox

Men on X are desperately trying to use a data set they clearly don’t have the reading comprehension to even understand to argue against women’s rights. In reality, this data shows women have come to care more about issues like the environment and bodily rights compared to women 20 years ago. Meanwhile, young men are far more likely to be against women’s rights and for political violence than their dads were. It’s clear which group is actually radically and which one is merely running away from the nuts.

Those are not rights, those are development goals. Rights are legal guarantees. Declaring a development goal a right is at best silly, at worst schizo propaganda drool. As can be seen by the Soviet Union declaring a right to be fed, only to then start a famine.

The UN continues to ignores these polls, which show both male and female prevalence rates of ever experiencing any online abuse or harassment. Instead, the UN biases the conversation from the start by only surveying females or by only reporting female data.

210 male journalists also appear to have completed UN Women's survey. However, UN Women did not disclose the results from the male journalists. If the results from the male journalists are similar to those of the female journalists, then this would invalidate UN Women's suggestion that only female journalists are targeted.

In my latest piece, I explain how The Australia Institute performed data spin when it claimed that its commissioned poll found evidence of "medical misogyny." The Institute deceived readers by focusing on the comparison between young women and older men, without informing readers that the poll also included a sample of young men, whose responses were similar to those of young women. See the tweets below for details.
