For a skipper with 11 players on a Saturday morning, every incoming message ping is like the distant sound of choppers to a Vietnam veteran.

I bet Joe Root isn't waking up and nervously checking his phone for texts saying "Sorry mate, can't play today. Wife's going shopping and I need to look after the dog"

I shared with my wife the news that Taylor Swift just got engaged. "So me you won't have to worry about me leaving you for her" She seemed relieved.

The demise of Boris Johnson illustrates how tenure of most cricket captains will end. Grumbling from the ranks makes it an even less pleasant experience. Where you've finally had enough and resign no-one will even try to talk you out of it.

Three drop outs from the 1s yesterday due to the "ping-demic" has meant some frantic selection reshuffle. I saw this coming last Saturday as they discussed their plans to "celebrate the nightclubs reopening in style". The folly of youth.

Holding the Euros final on a Sunday evening is great relief from a cricket perspective. This should become the standard for weddings too.

Woke from a fever dream that I'd forgotten to organize teas. Not having to beg someone every two weeks is one of the positives in the last 12 months Fewer unavailabilities due to foreign holidays and exams too. I'm going to miss covid when it's gone.

No messages this morning asking if the game is on. There are two possible explanations. Either people are learning not to do this or there were a lot of rain-cards played last night.

Today we have the return fixture and the boot is firmly on the other foot. My preference is obviously to play today, but having them drive over here and waste their day waiting for rain to stop is a very close second.
Second Team Skipper@SecondXISkipper

Today we drove 40 miles to find a waterlogged pitch that was clearly not going to be playable before Wednesday. One of the opposition helpful suggested we "drive home until it dries out". Our umpire is already looking forward to this fixture next year.
