Sometime in the not-so-distant future, tractors assembled under the brand name “Millat” will be shipped from Pakistan to farms in Africa. Millat Tractors, which started in the 1960s with a licence from Massey Ferguson, has graduated to selling to foreign markets under its own brand name. With this, Millat has become the first automotive company in Pakistan to export its own product to any country. What has made this possible is the nature of Pakistan’s tractor industry: around 94% of tractor production in Pakistan is localised. Unlike the larger automotive industry, engines, transmissions, and most parts of tractors are made locally. Despite this, Pakistan’s farm mechanisation rate is in the dumps. Pakistan makes the cheapest tractors in the world by one estimate, but Pakistani farmers cannot afford them. The industry will tell you inconsistent government policies and taxation are to blame. But there are deeper structural issues. The government gives out subsidies at large instead of targeting small landowners who need them. Farm economics suffer, and so do tractor sales. Millat has been seesawing between single and double shifts since 2010. Since 2007 there have been seven years where Millat’s revenues and profits have fallen rather than risen from the previous year. In the face of this, they have slowly been ramping up their export ambitions. In 2020 1000 tractors were exported, in 2021 this rose to 2000, and 2024 marked the export of 2500 tractors. With exports going beyond Africa and as far as Mexico, Millat wants to make sure they meet their capacity, whether there is demand in Pakistan or not. But can they pull it off? The company has a unique history. Nationalised in 1972 by Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, it was run by the federal government as a state-owned entity for two decades. In 1992, it was one of the first companies to be privatised by Nawaz Sharif’s first administration. But unlike many others, Millat Tractors was not acquired by an external buyer. Instead, it was privatised through a management buyout. Led by the government-appointed Managing Director Sikander Mustafa Khan, the company has been run by professional managers since. Satellite imagery suggests Iran may have moved up to 540 kg of highly enriched uranium to an underground tunnel complex in Isfahan just days before Israeli and US airstrikes in June 2025. A high-resolution image from June 9 shows a heavy truck carrying 18 shielded containers at the tunnel entrance. Experts believe the containers resemble Type B nuclear transport casks, potentially capable of holding Iran’s entire stockpile of 60% enriched uranium.
