SAD NEWS —
A fuel tanker driver identified as Kwabena and his pregnant partner were found murdered in their apartment at Immigration House on Saki Road, in the High Tension Immigration area of Golf City. Their bodies were discovered on Friday, May 1, 2026, in a pool of blood, with their 3-year-old daughter who was alive in the room.
According to reports, the suspect, a man who had befriended the couple about two weeks earlier, allegedly went drinking with Kwabena on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, helped him home, then killed the couple and stole GH¢470,000 in fuel sales proceeds. He left their 3-year-old child beside the bodies for three days without food or water. The Saki Police Command, together with Environmental Health Officers (EHOs), has recovered the bodies and deposited them at the morgue for autopsy. The police have launched a manhunt for the suspect, who remains at large.

This infographic from the Bank of Ghana provides additional insight into the performance of the domestic gold purchasing program. It shows that the Bank recorded a gross loss of 22 billion cedis on raw gold transactions.
The central government contributed 5 billion cedis to help offset part of these losses, while the sale of physical gold reserves also provided some relief. This is how the net loss ended up at about 9 billion cedis.
While GANRAP aim to build on the existing framework, the underlying challenge remains. As long as price incentives are used to purchase large volumes of gold from the small-scale sector, cost pressures will persist. The key will be finding a balance where gold can be purchased at a discount sufficient to cover these costs while still maintaining volumes. When we achieve that, we can have a party.

The Bank of Ghana’s 2025 financial results reflect the cost of stabilisation.

🇬🇭We need to put BoG losses in context.
FX support has benefits, particularly by reducing inflationary pressures.
We estimate that a 10% depreciation raises inflation by ~2.6pp in #Ghana.
If stabilization trims depreciation by 3–8pp, it could avoid ~GH¢11–29bn in inflationary pressure (at 2025 GDP levels).
In 2025, exchange rate pressures eased significantly—suggesting potentially large inflation benefits.
BoG losses (~GH¢16bn) are in the same ballpark. Stability isn’t free—but neither is inflation.
