I’ve spent a lot of time digging into the South Carolina Department of Social Services and what we found should alarm every parent in South Carolina. DSS is broken beyond repair and cannot be fixed. It needs to be rebooted and reconstructed from the ground up. I will bring in families who have actually been traumatized by this agency and get their help in this reboot keeping in mind that government's job is to protect our God given rights not weaponize the system against the citizen. Through DOGESC, we conducted an AI-driven audit of the agency, and the findings were not just concerning - they were staggering. Nearly 60% of DSS regulations go far beyond what the law actually authorizes. Another 11% have no connection to any law passed by the legislature at all. Think about that for a second. Unelected bureaucrats are creating rules that were never approved by the people’s elected representatives and then using those rules as if they are law. It gets worse. Family courts in South Carolina treat these regulations as law and defer to DSS’s interpretation of them. That means an agency can expand its own authority, interpret it however it wants, and then enforce it against citizens with the backing of the courts. There is no real check on that power. There is no accountability. There is no limit. None of these regulations have sunset clauses. That means a vague rule written decades ago can still be used today to go after a family, regardless of whether it reflects current law or common sense. When you combine that with the fact that most citizens don’t have the resources to fight back, you end up with a system where the government holds all the power and the citizen has almost none. That is how you get an agency that has been fully weaponized against the people it is supposed to serve. This is not just a policy failure. This is a system that is actively harming families and putting children at risk. Parents are being pulled into a process they don’t understand, forced to navigate a bureaucracy that answers to no one, and in many cases, they are left defenseless. When government operates this way, it stops being a protector and starts becoming something very different. The people benefiting financially from this tyranny are the only winners. This is what happens when the agency state is allowed to grow unchecked. DSS is not an isolated problem. It is the clearest example of a broader issue across South Carolina government. We have built a system of unelected agencies that write their own rules, expand their own authority, and operate without meaningful oversight. The political ruling class has allowed it to happen, either because they benefit from it or because they lack the courage to stop it. That ends when I am governor. We are going to reboot DSS from the ground up as part of a broader effort to reduce the agency state by at least 50%. These agencies need to get up from the other side of the table and come sit on the citizen's side of the table. The Declaration was clear that we do not derive our rights from government. All of government's authority comes from our consent. The citizen did not consent to being ruled by these bureaucrats where they feel helless and are often bankrupted financially and emotionally at a difficult time in their lives. Nothing and I do mean NOTHING comes before protecting our children. That is the first responsibility of government. If an agency charged with that responsibility has lost its way, then it must be fixed, and it must be fixed immediately. The people of South Carolina should never feel powerless against their own government. They should never feel like the system is working against them instead of for them. Whether I know you personally or not, I see you, I hear you and I will not let you down.
