@BBCr4today I’m sorry that neither Sir Peter Fahey nor Baroness Chakrabarti were able easily and clearly to answer @JustinOnWeb question but the answer is simple and clear Yes, the police already have the power to regulate both marches & assemblies that intimidate local people

I am nowadays almost never on here so I suspect few will see this but just in case…. A few people on here may know of our family’s interaction with the wonderful surgeon, Henry Marsh…he operated on my wife in 2004 when a major Cambridge teaching hospital told her to go home

@Geoff_Pearson @StoriesFromJack But people just assembling - even if (let’s assume) common purpose - is not bad …protesters are It’s the same idea as good v bad disruption This from something I’m working on today explains a bit more It’s not groups that are the social problem but their political motivation

@StoriesFromJack I have long been a critic of the by govt (and until recently police) focus on protest rather than assembly when the former is contested and lacks definition. The question of whether Pride is a protest or not, for example, always brings different responses.

So my reading of the proposed protest pyro ban offence in the new Crime and Policing Bill is that you wouldn't commit a crime if you set off a pyrotechnic while marching to a football match even if you were also protesting (eg about ticket prices, ownership, super-league).

@Geoff_Pearson @StoriesFromJack It was the exact reason why I chose as cover of my 2010 book Marc Wallingers Tate installation State Britain - a work of art based exactly on Brian Haw’s Westminster camp
