In 2022, veteran radio presenter and DJ Alex Ndawula died at Nsambya Hospital at the age of 59, bringing to a close a broadcasting career that helped shape modern FM radio in Uganda. Ndawula was widely regarded as a foundational figure in Uganda’s private radio industry. He began his career at Sanyu FM before joining Capital FM, where he spent more than two decades and became the voice of a generation through programmes such as The Morning Crew and Dance Force. Often described as the “King of the Airwaves,” he was known for his raspy voice, bold on-air personality and deep knowledge of music, which made his weekend mixes especially popular with listeners. Beyond his on-air presence, Ndawula played a key role in the shift from state-controlled broadcasting to a more vibrant, personality-driven commercial radio landscape following the liberalisation of the 1990s. He retired from Capital FM in May 2017 after more than 20 years of service. Born in New York, United States, in 1963, Ndawula moved to Uganda at the age of eight following the death of his father. He attended St. Mary’s College Kisubi, later studied in Nairobi and at Namasagali College, before enrolling at Nakawa Technical Institute, where he pursued marketing.
