In 2004, 23-year-old Frankie Brohm stuck his head out of a moving car after a night of drinking. His friend hit a telephone wire that severed Brohm’s head clean off. The friend kept driving 12 miles home and slept in his bloody clothes, not realizing his passenger was dead. A neighbor found the body in the truck the next morning. Fourteen years later, Hereditary opened with almost the same scene. Ari Aster has never publicly confirmed the case as his inspiration. But Charlie’s death in the movie isn’t an accident either. Before she gets in the car, the camera lingers for a moment on the wooden pole that will kill her. Scratched into the wood is the cult’s symbol, the same one painted on her grandmother’s headless body in the attic. The cult marked the pole in advance. The film reveals at the end that a demon called Paimon, lifted from a real 17th-century occult book, had been living inside Charlie the whole time. The clicking sound she makes with her tongue is him. He’s stuck in a girl’s body and confused. The cult kills Charlie to free him into her brother Peter, a stronger male host. When Peter starts clicking in the final scene, the demon has moved in. The opening shot of Hereditary is a magic trick. The camera floats across tiny dollhouses in Charlie’s mother’s workshop, then pushes through the window of one. A man walks into the tiny bedroom to wake up a kid, except it isn’t tiny anymore. Aster shot the real bedroom on a soundstage with one wall removed and matched it to the dollhouse so cleanly you can’t see the seam, putting you above the family looking down. You are the cult. The film cost $10 million and grossed $82.8 million worldwide. It became A24’s biggest hit at the time, beating Lady Bird and holding the record until Everything Everywhere All at Once in 2022. Critics scored it 90 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences leaving the theater gave it a D+ on CinemaScore.
