Just want to give a big shoutout and thank you to all of the #ENVIR492 students! Although at times it may have felt like we were all alone, we were all in this experience together. And I must say we finished STRONG 💪 in the end. Gonna miss my #POE community.

#FutureOfSnowAndIce This group are called Mandt's black guillemots, which are different than the ones found in Maine or Canada. They were thought to be trapped in the Arctic basin in the last Ice Age and evolved to live in icy conditions.

#FutureOfSnowAndIce Without ice, the Black Guillemots chicks are dying before the 35-day nesting period because of less food. In 2012, polar bear presence has increased, which increased threat to chicks.

#FutureOfSnowAndIce Lake waters are fresh water, the water is warmer on top. In Polar regions, the water is cold at the top and becomes warmer as you go down because of higher salt concentrations.

#FutureOfSnowAndIce There are "floats" in the ocean measures salinity, temperature, etc. These and satellites show warming occurring much faster in the Arctic than the Antarctic. The current hypothesis is because of differences ocean circulations.

#FutureOfSnowAndIce The IPCC brings together volunteer scientists to write non-policy reports, receives feedback from the public, and gives the report to policy-makers to determine what policies should be implemented.

#FutureOfSnowAndIce Dr. Armour also works with the IPCC on writing assessment reports. Here is the link for the official websites: ipcc.ch It is amazing to hear that they are focused on getting opinions from scientists.

#FutureOfSnowAndIce Richard Byrd was the first American to realize there was strategic value in exploring Antarctica! Since then, the US has a clear area, not claimed, of the Antarctica to conduct science research. The US's presence in Antarctica is 10x of other countries.

#FutureOfSnowAndIce The longest continuous later of ice tells the story of 8000 years. Within the ice, there was evidence of 8 periods of warming and cooling.

#FutureOfSnowAndIce As ocean freezes, the salt gets pushed down and a less salty ice sheet forms on top. This is very thin, which is why most of the melting in Antarctica is from sea ice, not land ice!

#FutureOfSnowAndIce Because of the Arctic vortex , the Arctic warms faster than the rest of the globe.
