I was proud to support the bipartisan HB 1002 in the last session, which allocated money to pay down our teacher pension debts and phases in tax cuts. The bill is also based on triggers, allowing us to ensure our economy is strong before we allocate resources.

So many veterans serve faithfully and selflessly and return to a lack of support and services. I co-authored SR 38, which aims to address the gaps in service for veterans and ensure that anyone who has honorably served has the resources they need to thrive in Indiana.

Indiana has the 3rd highest maternal mortality rate in the U.S. We clearly must do better. I supported HB 1140–now a law passed with bipartisan support—that extends postpartum Medicaid coverage. This helps make sure that women get the care they need for as long as they need.

Every Hoosier deserves clean, safe water. Last session, I voted in favor of HB 1313, which requires healthcare providers to offer lead screenings to young children. Catching lead exposure early is crucial, and will help many Hoosier kids live longer, healthier lives.

We need to think deeply about this issue, especially considering how intimate partner abuse is intertwined with maternal mortality. Homicides—many of which are likely the worst culmination of domestic violence—are a leading cause of maternal death in Indiana.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month, and should give legislators reason to think about how we solve this quiet, ongoing crisis. Domestic violence levels rose during COVID and haven’t returned to baseline. Better firearm safety, stalking, and harassment laws can help.🧵

I’ll continue to work to make sure all Hoosiers are secure in their retirements!

In today’s pensions committee, we considered funding a higher cost of living adjustment for first responders, as well as creating a retirement fund or benefit for public defenders. We need to provide secure futures for all public servants and I am grateful it’s being discussed.

To that end, I’ll be advocating for policies that meaningfully improve quality of life and place for our citizens.

Valuing Hoosiers means funding our schools, properly compensating workers, and creating a state where people can build a future. Tax incentives are tools, but don’t bring business and growth by themselves—a strong economy requires a state people want to live and work in.

Yesterday, the tax & fiscal policy study committee discussed essential topics like school funding, tax incentives and workforce programs. A key takeaway was that it’s critical to invest not only in programs, but in Hoosiers themselves. 🧵
