Thank you to my colleagues for their unanimous support yesterday of this bipartisan legislation to help protect some of our state’s most vulnerable residents.

Yesterday, the Senate unanimously passed bipartisan legislation I introduced in October during Domestic Violence Awareness Month to help better protect victims of domestic violence and stalking in our state who have been granted a PPO by the courts.

Sen. Ruth Johnson, joined by Sen. Paul Wojno, speaks in the Michigan Senate to recognize May 2025 as Treatment Court Month. Michigan’s 203 treatment courts help support individuals suffering from addiction & their families, while improving public safety outcomes for communities.

This week is Consumer Protection Week! Be wary of fake charities, malicious internet links, and suspicious emails. Stay alert for phone scams too — never give your Social Security number to someone over the phone. #NCPW2025

This provision of law was deleted by Democrats by House Bill 4567 in 2023 which was passed on party line votes in both chambers of the legislature.

Senate Bill 1238 of 2018 was signed into law to require ballots such as those cast by a Chinese national at UM to be treated as challenged ballots, which means they are able to be removed if needed.

🧵The only reason this ballot could not be removed from our state's official election results is that Democrats repealed the law that would have enabled this when they took control of the Michigan legislature in 2023. twitter.com/ChadLivengood/…

Here’s the thing that’s hard for partisan Republicans to reconcile about the Chinese voter in Ann Arbor: Election officials could not reach into the tabulator and pull out this UM’s student illegal paper ballot. There’s no way to trace a ballot after it goes into the machine. That’s by design — the government can’t track who you voted for. Conservatives support this, or at least should. And, as some Michigan Republicans have found out, tampering with election machines is actually a crime. The breach here began with a non-citizen willing to lie on an affidavit that they were a U.S. citizen in an effort to register to vote and cast a ballot. A voter-approved constitutional amendment allows college student IDs to be used as a form of identification to register to vote — whether it’s from the University of Michigan or Trump University. That’s how state and local election officials say the UM Chinese student registered to vote. Under Republican Secretary of State Ruth Johnson, there were some Canadians found to be voting in Michigan elections. They too must have lied on an affidavit attesting their U.S. citizenship — and used a driver’s license or state-issued ID to register to vote. detroitnews.com/story/news/pol…

Today we remember and honor all of our nation’s brave service members who became prisoners of war or were reported missing in action. According to the Department of Defense, nearly 82,000 Americans remain missing from past conflicts.

Removing references to fraud in the recount process could further undermine confidence in the election process, Sen. Ruth Johnson argued. "Saying we can’t even look at fraud or potential illegal activity during recounts seems counterproductive to me." ow.ly/VST750RtAEK
