My father died six months ago. At the funeral, my older brother read the will out loud in front of everyone: “Everything goes to my eldest son.” Not a penny for me. I smiled, hugged him, and told the relatives “he deserves it, he was always the responsible one.” Yesterday I was clearing Dad’s old lockbox and found a second will. Dated two weeks later. Handwritten. Notarised. This one leaves the entire £1.4 million estate… to me. And a letter explaining exactly why my brother was never supposed to see a single pound. (What that letter said broke me.)

Man: Can we talk about this calmly? Woman: You're invalidating my feelings, this is gaslighting, you're emotionally abusive and toxic, you lack empathy, men like you are the reason women need therapy, delete your account and go fix yourself

Man: You seem stressed, what's wrong? Woman: Work was rough, but also my therapist says I need more emotional labour from you. I need space for my self-care routine, my girls trip is coming up, I need new skincare, and you should read this book on masculine energy.

I grew up with my best friend like we were blood. Same poor neighbourhood. Same dreams. We used to hustle together selling phone accessories just to eat. In 2019, we started a small logistics company with our combined $5,500 savings. One old truck. Me driving, him handling the books because I trusted him with my life. By 2022, we had 12 trucks, 47 staff, and were doing over $1.2 million in revenue. Life was finally sweet. We bought houses, sent money home, even talked about going public one day. I handled operations and clients. He handled money and investors. “We’re brothers,” he always said. I believed him. Then, one random Tuesday, the accountant called me crying. “Boss… the accounts are almost empty. Over $873k moved out in the last 8 months to accounts I don’t recognize.” I confronted him that night at our usual spot. At first he denied everything. Then he broke. He had been secretly starting his own competing company using our clients, our drivers, and our money. He had also been telling big investors I was “difficult to work with” and “the reason the company wasn’t growing faster.” The same man who called me brother had been planning to push me out and take everything. I lost 19kg in two months from stress. Couldn’t sleep. My wife almost left because I became a different person. Some days I sat in my car outside our old neighbourhood just staring. The worst part? He didn’t even look guilty when I asked why. He just said: “Business is business. You would have done the same.” That sentence broke something in me forever.

Now I get over 45 buses and still dey expand. My family is comfortable. Village people respect me well well. Sometimes at night I still think about it. Was it really spirit or just one rich man playing a deep game? I tried to trace the account one time, but everything was clean. No red flag. The old man stopped calling after two years. Last time we spoke, he said my assignment with him don finish. Use the blessing well. I still get the first envelope framed inside my office. It reminds me where I came from.

Life in Naija is not ordinary at all. Some help fit come from places we no fit explain. I use the money to do good things, and it keeps multiplying. Plenty people wey hear small part of this story ask me how I blow so fast from okada to fleet owner. I just smile and talk about grace. But today I dey share the full thing because maybe my story go help another person wey dey grind. Keep your heart clean. Work hard. You never know who dey watch you.
