Parental Alienation is a type of emotional and psychological child abuse. It is when one parent turns their child against the other parent by manipulating, lying, or making the child feel guilty for loving the other parent. Slowly, the child starts avoiding or hating the parent who did nothing wrong. This is very harmful for the child as well as for the other concerned parties. The parent who is alienating the child is known as the ‘Alienating Parent’, while the parent who is getting alienated is known as the ‘Alienated Parent’ or the ‘Targeted Parent’. The other parent usually does this as an act of revenge or to enjoy the feeling of power to make the alienated parent suffer. It is very important to identify the signs of parental alienation in the early stages. This helps with child support and also protects the emotional well-being of the child as well as the alienated parent. It can have drastic effects like: - Depression - Fear of abandonment - Loss of connection - Relationship Difficulties - Low self-esteem - Academic difficulties - Poor critical thinking Parental alienation harms both the child and the alienated parent, which often leads to long-term emotional and psychological issues. Early recognition and intervention are key to protecting the child’s well-being and restoring healthy relationships.
