The thing about being 1.5 billion people and incredibly diverse is that even if the average is terrible, you should still get hundreds of people who are several standard deviations above the mean. That's how we get a Ramanujan despite half of the population being sub-82.

The fundamental flaw in this argument is that it assumes the BCCI cares about Cricket. Politicians will govern whichever sport is the most popular in the country.
If tomorrow Curling is being watched by a billion people, Jay Shah would simply lead that and dump everything else.
