"They were looking at two worms that looked a bit funny and decided to understand why." Sounds like a good summary of my PhD with @meera_sundaram studying rod like lethal mutants in C.elegans. Today, all worm developmental geneticists stand a little taller.

@ShahLabUCLA @greg_stephens That's exactly right. In these data, the missing dynamics are the heavy tails. Our attempt to capture those was indeed through the fluctuating landscapes shorturl.at/1ikJh. It's unfortunate that the papers didn't come out in the right order 😅

Despite the tremendous microscopic complexity (yes even in the worm-I’m looking at you vertebrate and mammalian enthusiasts), we constructed a remarkably effective Markov model dynamics, inspired from ideas in dynamical systems, statistical physics and information theory.

@greg_stephens @antoniocbscosta How much of this do you think comes down to "fluctuating landscapes"? Are the missing dynamics all in the heavy tails?

Does our model contain all of the dynamics? Of course not. In particular there are longer-time and non-stationary behaviors that we cannot capture.

When @willryu first shared his beautiful movies of a wiggling worm, I was blown away! But how can we both accurately and with interpretability capture the posture dynamics of an animal’s behavior?

Multiple postdocs out to academic/industry jobs + 2 grant NOAs in = open postdoc position. Worms are great to work with, sensory biology is an endlessly fascinating topic, and we are a group of good humans. Please email if interested!

@drugmonkeyblog @LuciaScience Have you done the digging to see if the haircuts actually enable more grants to break through or enable larger and more concentrated awards? Obviously impossible to determine post-hoc, but it at least feels like a form of regressive taxation to my poor modular budgeting self

@LuciaScience These are policies that look good short term, right? 10% cuts fund one more grant. Keeping the modular limit in place just one more year or decade lets them sneak that success rate up. Or so they think.

@drugmonkeyblog @Aging_Scientist That's a tough question, but one worth debating. I'd say "it depends on the circumstances" but 9/10 times folks will find a way to twist "circumstances" to screw someone else over

@ShahLabUCLA @Aging_Scientist Let’s suppose the fine print of University employment says the U owns the data and they can delegate the PI to use it. Should we? Just delete the holdout author and go ahead?

Ok so this scenario is the nightmare scenario. My view is that you don’t negotiate with terrorists. Take that person’s work out and figure out how to save the paper with other work.
