SHAKER HEIGHTS, OH (Oct. 23, 2024) – The Shaker Heights Police Department received the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Walmart Leadership in Community Policing Award for a midsize agency.
The award, which recognizes Shaker’s development of a mental health response program that now serves five communities, was presented at the IACP conference in Boston on Oct. 22.
In announcing the award, the chiefs’ association stated: “Committed to the IACP Trust Building Campaign, the Shaker Heights Police Department recognized the need in 2022 to implement a mental health response team to assist the police with behavioral health crisis calls. Since inception, the mental health response team expanded into a regional service provider for nearly 120,000 community members. Expansion of the mental health response team includes a licensed mental health clinician who provides diversion assistance to those in need, while also providing support to first responders. The impact of this program resulted in a reduction of use of force and increased trust with families of those receiving services.”
Accepting the award on behalf of the SHPD were Daniel Grispino, former Shaker Commander and current Beachwood police chief, and Annette Wallace, MSW, LISW-S, coordinator of the mental health response program, titled First CALL, for Crisis Response and Local Linkage (see image above).
Shaker Police Chief Wayne Hudson said, “The need for expanded mental health services became abundantly apparent post COVID lockdown. Shaker Heights mental health regional response program is becoming a model for the nation.”
Congratulations!
