My timeline lately has been filled with debates about when it is appropriate to ask questions and what counts as a “dumb” one. A few truths feel worth saying plainly. Being stuck is not failure. It is the beginning of inquiry. Not knowing what comes next is normal when the work is real. Not knowing is an opportunity to teach or to learn, and it deserves respect. Ask questions, especially of people. And if the answer does not make sense, it is perfectly fine to ask again and say, plainly, “I don't know what the hell you mean.” Tools, including AI, can assist thought, but they cannot replace the habit of thinking. If you cannot work without them, the skill is not yet yours.

For what it’s worth, I am sorry that has been your experience. Questions should be welcomed, not punished. I have always believed learning is a chain we keep alive by sharing what we know, not by guarding it. I ask questions about everything, all the time. Wven the ones that might sound foolish. Hell, I once asked @HandyGingerGal about a pocket hole jig after one of her videos and learned loads of new information. Curiosity should never feel like a risk.

Part of why I'm such a good student/researcher: I ain't asking you assholes SHIT Teachers, "friends," random people you've never said boo to just can't WAIT to call you a dumb fuck because they know something you don't. I will drive an hour to a university library and agitate my allergies in the archive stacks before I'll ask a question in a public forum. Ass-backwards incentive structure is what you got going on

@HandyGingerGal As you said, why mock someone because of an honest question. A person with a Doctorate has a deep level of understanding of a very specific field, that's the point. There are so many fields about which I am ignorant and would have questions that other would consider 'dumb'.

The people who complain that the world is getting dumber, will often be the same people who mock others for asking basic questions.

@jessica_barberi This happens more than you might think. I have students try to "correct" me in class because my answers don't match ChatGPT. One student last week told me I was wrong because I got 5 - x and Chat solved it as -x + 5. I was clearly wrong. 🤦‍♂️

One would think if the answer you come to is NOT on the multiple choice answer key YOU are wrong – NOT the teacher!
