Dark Lane is probably one of the best preserved examples of a medieval Holloway in Yorkshire. Where it once carried traffic between Halifax & Wakefield as part of the Magna Via, it now carries Ancient Monument status. #hollowaywednesday

@HikingHistorian I went on Friday and there wasn’t much to see. Nowhere near as good as it used to be.

I took this photo somewhere on the line of the Settle to Carlisle Railway one New Year's Day in the early 1990s. Possibly in the region of Aisgill (Cumbria). Could anyone help me to identify the snowy fell with the clouds rolling off it?

Magpie Mine, a nearly intact 19c lead mining site in Derbyshire, featuring a Cornish engine house & original winch. With over 200 years of history, it was once embroiled in a rivalry with Maypitt Mine, culminating in an 1833 trial of 24 workers for the murder of 3 Maypitt miners.

Wayland’s Smithy, a Neolithic long barrow from around 3700 BC, features massive sarsen boulders. Excavations revealed it was built over an earlier barrow with 14 remains. Named after the Norse smith Wayland, there are ties to folklore about travelers leaving coins for horseshoes.

The chalk ramparts of Uffington Castle, weathered over 2,000 yrs, loom over the Vale of the White Horse. Built by Celtics before the Roman invasion, it commands the historic Ridgeway. The nearby White Horse symbolises a Celtic deity, with lore linking it to St. George's dragon.

Explored the Trent & Mersey Canal near Shugborough Estate yesterday. Built in 1777 by Thomas Brindley, it was a key route for coal trade. Spotted the historic 14-arch bridge crossing the Trent, originally designed for pack horses in the 17c, the longest of its kind in England!

Chelmorton, at 1,200ft, is Derbyshire's highest village. St John the Baptist church, the tallest church with a spire in England, partly dating back to Norman times. The village is overlooked by Chelmorton Low, from which a stream flows down, bearing the name of Illy Willy Water.

Arbor Low Stone Circle, often called the "Stonehenge of the north." Believed to be the center of Englands ley lines, questions remain about its reclining stones. Historical accounts suggest they once stood upright, with one account stating they toppled during the Norman Conquest

The Touchstone Maze in Strathpeffer, Scotland, is a unique labyrinth which features standing stones, each representing different rocks from the Scottish Highlands. It's an interactive experience where you can learn about geology by examining labeled stones.

Part of a long-distance packhorse route that can be traced from Ashover to Wirksworth. Ashover parish used to be much larger & included Holloway, Lea & Dethick. St John's church at Dethick was built as a private chapel, so Ashover was used for burials. #hollowaywednesday

During my visit to York yesterday, the River Ouse was at a level of just under 10 ft, a level I've never seen before.
