@Shann_ME @MDoorpsy @TurningPointOU Yes. Sadly I have many students who cannot write at a college level. The rubric, however, would not allow for a 0 score for that alone. I’ve actually seen than what is in this paper worse in a handful of students over the years. Our public education is failing us.

For a psychology course at the University Oklahoma, Samantha Fulnecky was asked to write a 650-word essay reacting to an article about how people are perceived based on societal expectations of gender. In her essay, Fulnecky argued that traditional gender roles should not be considered stereotypes. She cited the Bible to support her stance that eliminating gender in society would be "detrimental" because that would put people "farther from God's original plan for humans." She received zero points out of 25 on the essay. Transgender professor, Mel Curtis, said Ms. Fulnecky, failed to use empirical evidence/and called parts of her essay offensive. "To call an entire group of people 'demonic' is highly offensive, especially a minoritized population," the instructor wrote in the online grading platform. Fulnecky says she followed the assignment guidelines and should not be penalized for her religious viewpoints. OU officials point to the formal grade-appeal process as the student awaits a decision. We at Turning Point OU stand with Samantha. We should not be letting mentally ill professors around students. Clearly this professor lacks the intellectual maturity to set her own bias aside and take grading seriously. Professors like this are the very reason conservatives can't voice their beliefs in the classroom. @jrmiller777 @MDoorpsy @TurningPointOU “Write at a university level” shouldn’t need to be in the instructions. It’s implied based on being at a university. It’s 5th grade level, at best. (Source: I have a 5th grade daughter & she can do a bit better than this.)

The rubric was designed to evaluate the student’s ability to engage with some non-specified “part” of the essay. I assume (hope) that other questions asked for a more thorough summary or analysis from the students. Based on the criteria for this essay, I can see that she did read and understand the basic claim of the article regarding gender fluidity and she then responded with her “feelings” and “beliefs.” I actually think it is a poorly designed prompt and does not ask enough of the students, but that is the failure of the professor to ask good questions, not the fault of the student who is responding within the guidelines of the rubric.
