🚨BRAND NEW RESEARCH PAPER 🚨 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/et… An investigation into shark behaviour during the recent fatal incident in Hadera, from a species not normally considered to be traumatogenic to humans. Shark provisioning must be highly regulated moving forwards 🦈 pls RT!

.@ConservationOrg Marine Safety Officer Edgardo Ochoa has made it his mission to rid oceans of discarded fishing gear that ensnares marine life. And a recent encounter with a manta ray entangled in a fishing line made for one of the most emotional moments of his career. #EarthDay

Marine debris is a huge problems for all marine life, including sharks. Divers were able to remove this line from this silky shark, but most animals are not so lucky. This image is a powerful reminder of why we need to keep our oceans clean! 📷️ @harrystone_photo

@GregDiDomenico @WhySharksMatter @SharkTrustUK @oneoceandiving @CleanerSeasOrg @FSUMarineLab @BrendanGodley @sharkproject @ElasmoSociety @AmFisheriesSoc @SSharkDiving @WWF_Sharks Thank you for your question, we realise it is important to take into consideration all possible causes and sources of fishing gear causing entanglement. We are currently looking into underlying factors such as overlaps in spatial variation of reports with fishing practices.

Approximately 10% of our reports involve sharks with hooks impaled in the mouth region🪝 These are generally sourced from commercial fishing lines and can remain lodged for years. Here is a recent photo of a bull shark (C. leucas) with a hook in the jaw. 📸@sharkaddicts - Florida

@GregDiDomenico @WhySharksMatter @SharkTrustUK @oneoceandiving @CleanerSeasOrg @FSUMarineLab @BrendanGodley @sharkproject @ElasmoSociety @AmFisheriesSoc @SSharkDiving @WWF_Sharks of the hooks. This does include recreational fishing, as we have had many reports describing a ‘cut the line’ technique used when a shark is caught instead of a target species. In terms of geographic range, longlines operate on a much higher geographic scale,

@GregDiDomenico @WhySharksMatter @SharkTrustUK @oneoceandiving @CleanerSeasOrg @FSUMarineLab @BrendanGodley @sharkproject @ElasmoSociety @AmFisheriesSoc @SSharkDiving @WWF_Sharks Many of these sharks manage to release themselves from the longlines however will retain hooks for an extended period of time. We are basing this off literature describing hook retention of sharks from pelagic fisheries, however we do realise there are other possible sources
