We are currently looking into underlying factors such as overlaps in spatial variation of reports with fishing practices.

Approximately 10% of our reports involve sharks with hooks impaled in the mouth region🪝 These are generally sourced from commercial fishing lines and can remain lodged for years. Here is a recent photo of a bull shark (C. leucas) with a hook in the jaw. 📸@sharkaddicts - Florida

This increases the likelihood of the hooks retained being sourced from commercial fisheries, but this does not eliminate the potential for these hooks coming from recreational fisheries.

We are basing this off literature describing hook retention of sharks from pelagic fisheries, however we do realise there are other possible sources

As these gears are passive and non-selective, they catch a wide range of species with a high amount of shark bycatch.
