Spoiler : Sony a perdu 171 millions de dollars. ↓ Steve Jobs vient de sortir l'iPhone. Exclusivité AT&T aux US. Un gamin de 17 ans du New Jersey, fan de T-Mobile, trouve ça abusé. Il achète un iPhone et passe son été à le démonter dans la cuisine de ses parents. Son nom : George Hotz. Il identifie le baseband processor — la puce qui verrouille l'opérateur. Il soude un fil dessus, balance une tension précise pour scrambler le code, et reprend la main sur la puce. Puis il écrit un soft qui débloque l'iPhone sur N'IMPORTE QUEL réseau. Il a 17 ans. Il vient de hacker Apple. Le lendemain matin, il allume sa caméra dans sa cuisine, sort un iPhone de sa poche : "Hi everyone, I'm geohot." La vidéo explose. Il devient une légende du jour au lendemain. Le CEO de Certicell lui échange l'iPhone contre une Nissan 350Z + 3 iPhones neufs. À 17 ans. Apple riposte avec des updates firmware. Hotz contre-attaque. C'est plié. Pourquoi c'était si dur ? Vulgarisation rapide : La PS3 a une architecture en couches imbriquées. Chaque couche (lv0, lv1, lv2, metldr, appldr...) est chiffrée et décryptée par la précédente. Tout passe par un "hyperviseur" — un superviseur qui contrôle tout l'OS. Pour cracker la console, il faut soit casser le crypto (impossible), soit trouver une faille dans cette chaîne de confiance. Hotz fait un truc complètement dingue : un glitch hardware. Il identifie une ligne précise sur la RAM. Pendant que l'hyperviseur invalide une entrée de table mémoire, il tire ce signal à la masse pendant quelques nanosecondes. Résultat : l'écriture est skippée. L'entrée reste valide. Il a un trou de mémoire avec accès read/write. Et de là, il pivote jusqu'à avoir l'accès complet à l'hyperviseur. 22 janvier 2010 : "I have hacked the PS3." Sony panique. Mars 2010, ils poussent un firmware qui SUPPRIME OtherOS — la fonctionnalité qui permettait d'installer Linux sur la PS3. Une feature légitime, payée par les utilisateurs, qu'ils retirent unilatéralement par peur d'un gamin. ÉNORME ERREUR. Pourquoi ? Parce qu'ils viennent de déclarer la guerre à TOUTE la communauté hacker mondiale. Hotz, qui voulait juste jouer avec sa console, est maintenant rejoint par fail0verflow, un collectif qui présente au Chaos Communication Congress fin 2010 que Sony a fait une bourde crypto monumentale sur leurs signatures ECDSA. Janvier 2011. Hotz publie la clé privée racine de la PS3 sur son site. C'est game over. Avec cette clé, n'importe qui peut signer du code comme s'il venait de Sony. Sony attaque en justice. Procès, restraining order, demande à PayPal de fouiller son compte, demande à YouTube et Google les IP de TOUS ceux qui ont visité ses pages. La réponse de Hotz ? Il sort un rap. "The Light It Up Contest." "Yo it's geohot / And for those that don't know / I'm getting sued by Sony." Le clip est génial. Le flow est bon. Parce que ce mec, quoi qu'il touche, devient bon. Génie universel. Mais le vrai show n'a pas encore commencé. Anonymous voit le procès. Ils déclarent Operation Sony. DDoS massifs sur les serveurs Sony. Manifs devant les Sony Stores. Le PlayStation Network commence à tomber. Puis fin avril 2011, un hacker anonyme entre dans le PSN et vole les données personnelles de 77 MILLIONS d'utilisateurs. Cartes bancaires, adresses, mots de passe. Sony est obligé de fermer le PSN pendant 24 jours. Coût total estimé de l'affaire pour Sony : 171 millions de dollars. Sans compter les class actions des utilisateurs dont les données ont fuité, et la réputation détruite. Hotz ? Il a settle hors-cour. Aucun dommage à payer. Juste l'engagement de plus toucher aux produits Sony. Il déclare publiquement : "Hacker du homebrew sur ses propres devices c'est cool. Voler les données de millions d'innocents, c'est pas cool." Classe jusqu'au bout. La suite ? → Il bosse chez Google et Facebook → En 2014, il root TOUS les Android avec towelroot (un week-end de boulot) → Il fonde comma.ai pour faire de la conduite autonome open-source → En 2022 il lance tinygrad, un framework de deep learning → Il est rentré chez Twitter pendant 4 semaines à la demande d'Elon pour fixer la search Quoi qu'il touche → maîtrise. LA LEÇON : Les hackers ne sont pas des criminels. Ce sont les anticorps de notre système. Ils trouvent les failles avant les vrais méchants. Ils gardent les gros corps honnêtes. Ils défendent le droit de bidouiller ce qu'on a acheté. Quand vous attaquez un hacker génial, vous n'attaquez pas une personne. Vous attaquez un réseau planétaire d'esprits libres qui vont s'unir pour vous foudroyer. Sony l'a appris à 171 millions de dollars.
