i've operated multiple 7 figure revenue ecommerce businesses over the past 10 years one thing i think you could do if you were a savvy hedge fund in public markets is hire an analyst to get buyer accounts with all of the largest wholesale distributors in various retail sectors, eg "sporting goods" have your analyst set up a Bob's Sporting Goods shopify store (some distributors won't onboard you without a plausible retail point of sale) then request api access to the inventory backend of these distributors (most have this), and map 1:1 the increments/decrements of inventory multiplied by SKU wholesale cost to estimate actual sales over time i am convinced you could map that to get with single digit percent of actual sales, per distributor, and within low double digit percent of actual sales *per manufacturer* (this is the actual goal). can't get historical so gotta just start pulling now and let it run for a while then evaluate those numbers against analyst sales estimates for the manufacturers and size your bets according to the beat/miss estimated difference. you'll lose when there are big box retailers who place chunky orders direct from mfr that bypass the wholesale distribution mechanism, so you need to weed out those mfrs and focus on the ones that have smoother data. or figure out how to account for that cleanly (also probably doable and worthwhile) i'm sure someone somewhere is doing this but i think you could absolutely outperform and this scales well. there are a many distributors with absolutely zero obfuscation of their inventory backend via api as long as you have an analyst with half a brain to implement this for you

I’ve spent the past 6 years during my Christmas Holidays being glued to my phone, stuck on charts, and missing unique moments for a market that for the most part stays the same. It’s the only regret I have in recent memory. My parents are older, my grandparents approach their century year milestones. I can’t even remember how the last few years felt. Always a white noise buzzing in my ear, worrying about positions and things that truly don’t really matter. This year, I am taking it upon myself to step away from markets, as there is always an excuse to be around them. Of course, there could be an emergency scenario. But mindlessly staring at Christmas price action is usually a waste of time in retrospect. A reminder to cherish the unique moments in your life. At the end of the day, that’s what we started this journey for. To give ourselves our time back, and to be around the people that matter. It’s an ironic scenario to work during the Holidays if this was always your goal to begin with. With this being said, I wish everyone Happy Holidays, and a fantastic New Year. 2025 will be the year for plenty of you. Come back with a refreshed state of mind. All love, Rego
