Our lab, and collaborators, will be presenting several papers next week that advance the design of Globally Equitable AI systems—tools and frameworks that center equity, cultural awareness, and inclusivity in high-stakes contexts. If you’ll be at CHI and want to connect, please reach out! On Monday 🔹 @SharonHeung will present our work on personalizing moderation tools to help disabled users manage ableist content online. This work shows how users want control over filtering and framing ableist speech, while also highlighting their skepticism toward AI-based moderation systems. Paper: adityavashistha.com/uploads/2/0/8/… 🔹@agdhruv will present our cross-cultural study on how Western-centric AI writing tools influence users from different cultural backgrounds. We find that AI suggestions not only benefit American users more but also subtly shift Indian users’ writing styles toward Western norms, raising critical concerns about cultural homogenization. Paper: arxiv.org/pdf/2409.11360 On Tuesday 🔹Joy Ming will present our award-winning work on designing data-driven advocacy tools for home care workers—an undervalued, low-wage workforce. We unpack tensions between individual and collective goals in worker-advocate collaborations and explore how to responsibly collect and use data to support frontline labor rights. We reveal how algorithmic tools—often deployed without workers’ knowledge—pose serious risks to their autonomy, livelihoods, and safety, prompting calls for stronger worker protections and democratic AI governance.. Paper: adityavashistha.com/uploads/2/0/8/… On Wednesday, 🔹 @PragnyaRamjee will share the work led by her (and Mehak) and the amazing Mohit Jain at Microsoft Research India on deploying LLM-powered tools for community health workers in India. We show, in collaboration with @teamkhushibaby, how careful design can help address informational gaps in low-resource settings.
