Msia seeking to join #BRICS is part geopolitical hedge and part frustration with western rules based order. For countries in China's orbit, #Brics "affords a cover for them to diversify their relationships... and thus hedge against China." fulcrum.sg/southeast-asia…

On behalf of the American people, I thank Joe Biden for his extraordinary leadership as President of the United States and for his decades of service to our country. I am honored to have the President’s endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination.

SEA's growing fomo: "ASN does not constrain its mbers fm joining o/r multilat cooperation platforms, but the unexpected eagerness of ASN ctries to join BRICS does speak to a weakening faith in ASEAN’s ability to hedge & foster greater intra-regional trade integration..."

Fulcrum Commentary by @Sharon__Seah - The fact that five Southeast Asian countries are seeking to join BRICS should not be seen as an affront to the West and its so-called rule-based order. fulcrum.sg/southeast-asia…

Just so that there is no confusion, the survey does not "prove" anything. It is a snapshot of sentiments among respondents that ISEAS identified as business, political, or academic leaders ("elites") during a given window when the survey took place (Nov 23-Jan 24, I think?).

Caveats 1st. This is an elite survey & it is possible to argue abt representativeness, but 🇺🇸’s handling of its relationship w/🇮🇱 & inaction on the humanitarian disaster in Gaza doesn’t just stay in the Mid-East. They affect its standing in SEA. scmp.com/week-asia/poli…

The State of Southeast Asia survey 2024 is newly published by ISEAS - Yusof Ishak Institute, and this edition churns out some very interesting - even surprising - results, especially this one. Read the report here: iseas.edu.sg/centres/asean-…

"Perhaps the tide of sentiment has shifted toward China as the more consequential relationship for the region, but it remains to be seen whether the recent trend of diminishing regard for the U.S.’s strategic partnership will mark a sea change in regional geopolitics."
ISEAS - Yusof Ishak Institute@ISEAS

.@Sharon__Seah - US was ASEAN’s preferred power to align with since the 2020 #SSEA survey. This year, more respondents are leaning toward China. SEA may remain engaged with the US while harbouring apprehensions towards China, but the tide may be shifting. fulcrum.sg/choosing-china…
