Officer: Japan. another officer walks over holding my wallet carefully like sacred relic, everything still inside, cash untouched. Me genuinely emotional. Me: This country is unbelievable. Officer smiles proudly, then pauses. Officer: There was one issue. Me: …what issue. Officer opens wallet slowly, pulls out embarrassing anime sticker I forgot existed. silence. both officers staring at me respectfully but differently now. Officer: You like magical girls? Me: …we all have struggles. older officer suddenly leans forward. Old Officer: Season two was disappointing. Me: WHAT. Old Officer: They ruined power scaling. younger officer immediately joins debate. Officer: No no movie fixed it. suddenly entire police station arguing anime lore passionately. one detective emerges from back room holding instant noodles. Detective: Original manga better. Me: I CAME HERE FOR A WALLET.

If a man expresses anger, he’s toxic. If a man expresses fear, he’s a coward. If a man expresses sadness, he’s weak. If a man sets boundaries, he’s insecure. If a man has standards, he’s a misogynist. If a man expresses emotions, he’s a simp. If a man shows no emotion, he’s heartless. In the end you can’t win so do what is right by you, your family, and God. Nothing else matters.

To one religious extremist in my inbox. You keep sending me graphic images and saying things like: “Did you forget Hiroshima and Nagasaki?” “You’re just America’s bitch.” No. I didn’t forget. No Japanese person forgets Hiroshima. No Japanese person forgets Nagasaki. But I’m not going to look at some American kid, student, tourist, or friend today and hate them for what happened 80 years ago. That’s not strength. That’s just letting the past rot inside you. Yes, Japan’s postwar occupation is complicated. Yes, there are things people still argue about. But Japan rebuilt. Japan moved forward. And part of that history includes its relationship with America. Remembering the past does not mean living as a prisoner of hatred. Hiroshima and Nagasaki are not props for your rage. They are Japanese memories. Japanese pain. And a warning to the world. I will not let you use our dead to feed your hate.
